Overnight Summer Camps? What age?

Started by Fiona , author of Bantering Blonde 5/7/2010 6:16:38 PM
Did you attend an overnight camp as a kid?  My summers at sleep away camp were really some of the most memorable and formative.  I still keep in touch with camp friends, our alumni is actually quite active and I would love to send my kids to overnight camp.  I think it is really important for them to experience a bit of independence in a safe and well supervised environment ... otherwise they go crazy when they go college!

Loved overnight summer camp.  I think I was 12/13 the first time.  We were gone for an entire week and I never even thought to call home.

oooh we had this split in the road that made a "Y" and we were allowed to have "pda" only at that place for a few minutes at night before heading to cabins for lights out.  aaah yes those were the days ;)

I never went to an overnight camp, but I taught at a learning camp the summer I graduated from college...and my experience made me vow to never send my kids to an overnight camp!

 Glad you had good experiences!

really? can you tell me more about that Ginny?  We are talking about overnight camps this week on the MomActive show on MomTV and I'd be interested in hearing about your experience...

We had some very good counselors, but they were just college kids or in their early 20s, just like I was. I knew at least a couple of counselors that smoked pot on their time off, and I also stumbled (almost literally!) on a counselor and a teacher having sex in a sleeping bag...right out in the open! It was after hours, so I'm sure none of the kids would have seen them, but still!  The camp nurse was also very young and inexperienced, and didn't catch an ear infection in one of the campers until his ear started to drain. And the main source of entertainment on our nights off was going out to bars to drink.

I think if I were going to send my girls to camp, I'd research the camp and the employees very thoroughly!

If you want to send your child to camp, you should consider contacting a company such as Tips on Trips and Camps. They have been helping families for years and give parents the information they need to make an informed decision.  The service is free!

Thanks for the tip!!We just had our camp special on MomActive on MomTV and i've learned a ton from the folks at Sanborn Camps.  A great resource would be the aca site that has tons of tips and has 300 terms for accreditation.  I just love the people I've met researching this project - they have a real passion for kids.  Check out this site for the ACA http://www.acacamps.org/
