  • Khaosan Road

Khaosan Road or Khao San Road is a short street in central Bangkok, Thailand, which is currently the backpacker’s delight. This street was constructed in 1892 during the reign of Rama V. It is located about 1 kilometre north of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. It is crowded with bars, shops and restaurants.

How much time is needed to explore: You can spend a whole joyful day at Khaosan Road doing various things. Spend some time shopping on Khaosan Road, enjoy a few drinks, look for endless dancing options and drinking at the clubs. The distance from Sukhimvit to Khaosan Road is around 12.3 kilometres and takes around 29 minutes to reach by road. The maximum time to reach via bus ranges from 35 to 45 minutes.

From Pratunam: Unfortunately, there is no BTS stop next to Khao San Road. The nearest station is the National Stadium, which is approximately a 4 kilometre walk from Khao San. From that point, take a taxi to Khao San and travel by using the meter. This way you can save considerably on taxi fares. The main benefit of choosing an Uber/Grab over normal taxi or tuk tuk is the comfort of having a set price and not having to haggle for the best deal and still feel cheated.

Tuk Tuks and motorbikes are exciting, authentic and fun options to travel. But take note that tuk tuks do not have meters and you need to bargain on fares. Tuk tuks are a slightly better option during rush hour traffic because they can weave in and out through crowded streets. Price negotiation is however necessary before you board a tuk tuk. 

Bus travel is the best for all who are extremely budget conscious and confident. It might take more time than travelling by taxi. Bus fares can be as low as 20 baht. Buses 2, 3, 15, 53, 511, and 509 all reach near Khao San Road. There are direct buses departing from Pantip Pratunam and arriving at Khok Wua Intersection Opposite Lottery. Bus services operate on a regular/daily basis and departs every 10 minutes. The journey takes approximately 12 minutes.

The cheapest way to get from Pratunam Market to Khaosan Road is to catch a bus which costs 10 – 35 baht with a journey time of about 21 minutes. The quickest way to get from Pratunam Market to Khaosan Road is to board taxi which will costs around 110 – 130 baht and takes around 6 minutes.

From Sukhimvit:

There are regular bus services from Sukhimvit to Khaosan Road. There are direct buses departing from Soi Sukhumvit 10 and arriving at Khok Wua Intersection Opposite Lottery. Buses run every 15 minutes on a daily basis. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes.

The next best option in to travel by taxi. It takes about 30 minutes and taxi fare will be 90 baht. You can also opt for the waterway and reach Khaosan by boat on the canal Saen Seap. But the canal options involves a lot of walk. Go to the canal boat station near Khaosan, then traverse or sail via canal boat till Nana or Asok stations. Sailing time is about 20 minutes.

The closest BTS Skytrain stations to Khao San Road are Siam Station, Ratchatewi Station and the National Stadium Station. If you reach by BTS, then you can depart on any of three nearby stations and walk the distance between Khao San Road and the stations which is about 5 kilometres. 

The cheapest option to travel from Sukhumvit to Khaosan Road is to travel by MRT which costs 25 – 35 baht with a travel time of 40 minutes. The quickest way to get from Sukhumvit to Khaosan Road is via taxi which is expensive costing around 120 – 150 baht and taking around 9 minutes.

  • Patpong 

Patpong is a real entertainment district of Bangkok catering primarily to foreigners and expatriates.  Patpong is internationally known as the most famous red light district located in the heart of Bangkok’s sex industry. The street has innumerable bars and it is the district where Thailand’s go-go culture is believed to have started. The street is lined with dozens of neon-lit strip bars offering ‘naughty’ shows for adult entertainment.

How much time is needed to explore 

You can spend a fun-filled evening walking across the Patpong area. You can also enjoy visiting the pubs and bars, including the strip bars, and also indulge in relaxing massages or other kinds of entertaining shows.

From Pratunam 

The distance from Pratunam to Patpong is around 8.5 kilometres and takes approximately 21 minutes to reach by road. The other taxi routes are 5 kilometres in 23 minutes and 7.5 kilometres in 24 minutes. Bus takes around 18-20 minutes to reach the Patpong area. 

From Sukhimvit 

The distance from Sukhimvit to Patpong is around 4.3 kilometres and takes approximately 16 minutes to reach by road via taxi. The other routes are lengthier, around 5.4 kilometres and 6.7 kilometres and each takes a bit more than 20 minutes.

The cheapest means of travel from Pratunam to Patpong is to take a bus which will cost 10 – 35 baht and will take around 9 minutes of travel time. The fastest way to reach Patpong from Pratunam is to avail the taxi service which will cost around 75 – 95 baht and will take approximately 3 minutes. Alternatively, if you take the bus route, there is a direct bus departing from Wat Pathum Wanaram which arrives at Bus Stop BTS Saladaeng and run in an interval of every 15 minutes daily. The journey time would be approximately 9 minutes.

From Sukhimvit

The cheapest way to travel from Sukhumvit to Patpong is to avail the MRT that will cost 22 – 35 baht and will take 13 minutes to reach. The quickest way to get from Sukhumvit to Patpong is to take a taxi which costs 95 – 120 baht and takes around 5 minutes. There is also a direct train that departs from Sukhumvit and arrives at Si Lom. Services depart every five minutes and operate daily with a journey time of approximately 8 minutes. The walking enthusiasts can walk down to Patpong. Also, you can take a tuk tuk.

Patpong falls within walking distance from the BTS Skytrain Silom Line’s Sala Daeng Station, and MRT Blue Line’s Si Lom Station and thus Patpong is easily accessible by BTS and MRT.

  • Soi Cowboy

Soi Cowboy is a bustling street in Bangkok, Thailand, that has a line of 40 bars, mostly go-go bars, catering to tourists and expatriates. The street was named Soi Cowboy based on the cowboy hat that was worn by the African-American who opened the first bar in the vicinity in the decade of 1970s. The distance from Pratunam to Soi Cowboy is around 4.3 kilometres and takes around 8 minutes to reach by road. The other taxi route is of 5.8 kilometres but takes around 10 minutes and yet another one is 4.3 kilometres and takes 14 minutes. The time range to reach Soi Cowboy via bus is minimum of 38 minutes and maximum of 1 hour 8 minutes. 

The distance from Sukhimvit to Soi Cowboy is around 2.2 kilometres and takes approximately 11 minutes to reach by road via taxi. The other taxi route is of 5.9 kilometres but takes around the same time of 12 minutes. By bus, time taken would be something in between 12-17 minutes via two different routes.

The cheapest way to travel from Pratunam Market to Soi Cowboy is to avail the bus which costs 10 – 35 baht and takes 16 minutes approximately to take you to the destination. The quickest way to reach Soi Cowboy from Pratunam Market is to avail a taxi which costs 85 – 110 baht and takes approximately 4 minutes to reach. There are direct buses that depart from Opposite Pantip Pratunam and arrives at Sukhumvit Soi 23. The buses operate at an interval of every 15 minutes and operate every day with a journey time of approximately 9 minutes.

From Sukhumvit

The cheapest way to get from Sukhumvit to Soi Cowboy is to avail the bus, charging 10 – 35 baht and taking 13 minutes and to ease the journey there are direct buses departing from Bus Stop BTS Thonglo and arriving at Soi Sukhumvit 18. Buses run every 15 minutes every day and takes approximately 6 minutes to transfer. The time range to reach Sukhumvit Soi 55 via bus is 40 – 50 minutes with a short walk to the bus stations. 

The distance from Sukhumvit to Sukhumvit Soi 55 is around 8 kilometres and takes approximately 16 minutes to reach by road via taxi and takes around 17 minutes via another route of 10.3 kilometres or 18 minutes via 12.8 kilometres. The journey time would be around 46 minutes to around 1 hour 20 minutes by bus.

You can simply reach from Sukhumvit to Sukhumvit Soi 55 by bus, BTS, taxi or even tuk tuk.   • Rambuttri Alley

Rambuttri Alley or Ram Buttri Road or Soi Ram Buttri is a small road or soi, as it is called in Bangkok, Thailand. It is situated near Khaosan Road in the Bang Lamphu neighbourhood. This road consists of two parts. Rambuttri gives a feel of how Bangkok used to look before the glittering skyscrapers came into existence. The lane is lined by leafy and shady trees and gives out a laid back vibe attracting a large number of tourists.

A total time of 1 – 2 hours is required for exploring the Rambuttri Alley or Ram Buttri Road. The street has a great mix of restaurants, bars and street food stalls. Do some small shopping of knick-knacks, T-shirts, books and trinkets and also eat, drink and enjoy.

The time range to reach Rambuttri Alley via bus is 29 minutes to 58 minutes. 

The distance from Sukhimvit to Rambuttri Alley is around 6.4 kilometres and takes approximately 14 minutes to reach by road via taxi and around 15 minutes via the other route of 6.3 kilometres and 17 minutes via the third route  of 7.7 kilometres.

The quickest way to travel from Sukhumvit Soi 11 to Khaosan Road is to take the taxi which costs around 120 – 150 baht and takes around 9 minutes. There is also a direct bus that departs from Nana BTS Station and arrives at Khok Wua Intersection Opposite Lottery. The bus services depart every 15 minutes and operate on a daily basis with a journey time of approximately 19 minutes. The Rambuttri Alley is located around 900 metres from Khaosan Road and is hardly a 5-minute walk.
