How to Mentally Prepare for Online Exercise Classes

It’s normal to have a lot of questions and concerns when you’re starting up a new workout routine. From typical questions such as “how many times per week should I work out?” to more in-depth questions such as “what type of bike is good for exercise?” there are a lot of things to consider. And with the recent shift to online exercise classes, you may be wondering how you can maintain your normal level of enthusiasm. After all, it’s much easier to stay energetic and work your hardest when there are other people around you.

The good news is that it’s possible to enjoy your online exercise class just as much as you enjoy your typical in-person exercise classes. You just need to make sure you prepare yourself in advance. It’s not enough to drag yourself out of bed and throw on a tank top and sweats. You also need to get your head in the game before the class even starts. Here are a few ways to mentally prepare yourself for online exercise classes.

Make Sure You Have the Right Equipment

You may be used to taking spin classes at the gym, but before you sign up for an online version, make sure you have the right equipment. You’ll need either a stationary bike or a regular bike with a bike trainer. Most people like to use a trainer for indoor cycling during the winter because they get to ride on a bike they are already familiar with and ride regularly outdoors. Warm Up Beforehand

A warm body performs much better than a cold body. Most online exercise classes include a warm up, but they may not provide as much warm-up time as you need. When you’re warmed up, you’ll have an easier time doing a variety of exercises, from aerobics to riding comfort bicycles. So take 5-10 minutes before your class officially starts to move your body and get your blood pumping.

Set a Goal

Before you start your virtual workout, set a performance goal in your mind. Decide in advance how hard you’re going to push yourself, then do everything you can to meet your goal. Sometimes the physical progress you make throughout your workouts can seem minimal. However, if you keep a workout diary, you’ll be able to see how your strength and fitness improves over time. This can be very motivating and can help build the mental toughness you need to continue improving and stretching yourself to your limits in every online exercise class.
