Day 24: How to Use a Magazine to Improve Your Blog

Started by Lynda , author of Daily Window {Photography. Photo Editing. Inspiration.} 8/10/2010 10:35:54 PM

Finally, an offline activity and excuse to go to Barnes & Noble and relax for an hour!

Today's task is to take some sticky notes, a notebook, pen and magazine and analyze it for marketing, design and post ideas along with tips on writing, monetizing your blog and engaging your readers.  It's also a great way to study up on your niche!

Questions:

1) Did this exercise inspire you to try anything new with your own blog?

2) What magazine did you choose to analyze?

1) Did this exercise inspire you to try anything new with your own blog?

I love love LOVE magazines. I have way too many subscriptions on way to many topics. While magazines seem to offer similar cover strategies, I did get some ideas as I looked through them. As far as trying something new, I'm still exploring what I would do with the inspiration.

2) What magazine did you choose to analyze?

I analyzed Rachel Ray and Family Fun. Even US offered some insight into reaching an audience.

I'm in the process of doing this now...I just recently purchased Where Women Create. It was a splurge {$14.99} but I love it...and it features really successful, creative women and their design/work areas.

I've been taking notes on who advertises, layout of the articles & pictures - to possibily apply to my blog. Because this is  more of an "artsy" type of publication, I'm attracted to how visually appealing it is to look at and to get an inside look at some of the designers I admire.

Here's my latest post on Inspiration ~ I was inspired...

Where Women Create is one of my favorite magazines.  I'm gonna run off to the store tomorrow and pick up a few new mags.  Thanks for the tip.

I'm working on this now and LOVE it! It actually inspired me to do something that I wasn't expecting. Here I thought I would get some content inspiration (though I have, it wasn't the big thing) and out of nowhere I got this entire REDESIGN inspiration! I'm throwing my current color scheme out of the window and redoing the look and feel.

What magazine inspired this? The Nest. You know, like from thenest.com - I just love the colors, the lines... .the entire aesthetics of it. Looks like I'll be pulling an all-nighter.

Oh, and definitely got some good content ideas as well. ;)

American magazines are silly expensive here, but I went over a (free) beauty mag with a designer friend today and we chatted about my blog's design and expanding into cards and some potential merch.

It's called "Belleza Hoy", LOL!

Yesterday's post was the weekly Bad Mom Confessions: “I never bathe my baby” and “My baby bathes alone” – Bad Mom Confessions

Well the end all be all mag for me is Entertainment Weekly. I devour it every week when it comes in the mail. What I love the most about ET and what I try to do in my own lame way is inject humor and not take myself too seriously. ET never comes off as snobbish in their reviews of anything and that's what I love about them and try to emulate. I could use more pictures because I enjoy looking at them. I've never really checked out their website, but I notice they always have a blurb about a special discussion going on. Maybe I could incorporate something like that.

This is a great idea, I read both Monicle and Easy Living which are both very different.

One of the things I noticed is that there are articles of different sizes, they're not all the same length, some contain lots of photos and some none.

Oooh! I can't wait to do this task! The hard part will be choosing a magazine....food...sports....fashion....so many!

Can't wait to be inspired!
