How to deal when post is stolen

Started by Miriam 8/2/2010 9:56:51 AM

Writing a blog is a labor of love. We all know it. Thats why its so upsetting when we find that something we have worked so hard on has been stolen.

My plastics blog is rather technical and takes me a long time to write. Ive been writing posts that are aimed at newbies and one of those posts was recently completely stolen.

My original Post - http://plasticsandtheplanet.com/archives/85

The stolen post - http://hb.majornet.cn/en_new/news_details.asp?pkid=162&classId=208

What can I do about this? They didnt even leave me ANY credit.

Write directly to the author and ask them to remove the post as it is direct plagarism.  See if they remove it.

Contacting them and letting them know that you are aware that they stole your post is really the only thing you can do.

Unfortunately there really isn't any other recourse.  You could check for comments and contact anyone that seems to be reading and let them know that the blog is stealing posts from other others, but I find that after contacting them that really the only thing to do is move on.

The only other thing I could think of (if they don't respond to you) is to contact anyone that advertises on their site and inform them of the situation, but it doesn't look like they do.

Miriam,

Candice's suggestion is the really the only option. You can't make them do anything unless you want to spend money on attorneys.

I know how you feel. I spend up to 16 hrs of actual writing time on some posts and get them stolen too.  Do what you can by contacting them and then move on.

Try to write in your own personality so that it's less likely to be stolen wholesale.

Wow.  I think the first thing I would do is send an email using the "send inquiry" button on the bottom of the page stating how much you will charge them to continue using your article on their site or indicating you will be getting in touch with your lawyer to put together a formal cease and desist letter.

Something like that usually does it.  If not, if you have any lawyer friends who could send out a cease and desist order from their letterhead, that would be powerful.

Unfortunately, threats are about as far as you can take it.  You'll likely never get any monetary compensation from them.

Not only send a letter to the author, send a letter to the hosting company. Accusations of plagarism have always been taken seriously by hosting providers, since they can be liable for damages when stolen content is allowed to stay on their servers.

Many of the articles I write in my ezine and on my blog contain this little paragraph at the end:

WANT TO USE THIS ARTICLE IN YOUR E-ZINE, BLOG OR WEB SITE? You can, as long as you include this complete blurb with it: Sandy Grason is a Rock Star Author, Int’l Speaker & Hot Mogul. Get on the Guest List for Sandy’s next Virtual Cocktail Party®, gain access to private videos, articles, tips, tools and strategies. Get Fabulous Free Gifts including: 60-minute mp3 download “The Manifesting Mojo Class” where you’ll learn how to rock your manifesting mojo now at www.SandyGrason.com

Usually that helps-then if they want to use it, I get more traffic and subscribers.  However, if someone is intent on stealing your stuff, they'll find a way to do it.

Breathe, keep focused on the awesome stuff that only YOU can create and know that karma is a bitch.

;-)

Thanks everyone for the support. The site in question seems to be based overseas so I'm not sure how much they have to adhere to copyright laws anyways. I do like Sandy's suggestion. If people are going to steal hopefully I will at least get some views from it.

I just finished my 31DBBB Challenge task for Day 16, inspired partially by this thread!
