Day 2: Write A List Post

Started by Mama Kat , author of Mama's Losin' It! 7/20/2010 1:21:08 AM

Loved all of the interaction yesterday and seeing such a strong group of women come together to encourage and motivate one another. Those elevator pitches are looking good. If you haven't linked yours up yet be sure to do so in yesterday's thread!

Today's task is to write a list post. The purpose of a list post is to provide your readers with information that is easy to read and spread.

Key Concepts:

  • Lists are popular for bloggers who want the message to go viral.
  • There are a variety of ways of incorporating lists into your blog.
  • Lists break down the complicated.
  • Lists are easy to read.

Question 1: Have you considered list posts as a way to create meaningful content in the past?
Question 2: What do you like about reading and writing list posts?

And finally, if you published a link list in response to the challenge today, don't forget to provide the link below!

Oh, I didn't answer the questions.

Question 1: Have you considered list posts as a way to create meaningful content in the past?

Yes, I have done a list before on Society of Socialpreneurs!

2010 Social Media Conventions & Events for Mom Bloggers

I wanted this list to be helpful so I added twitter links and facebook links when I could find them.

Question 2: What do you like about reading and writing list posts?

I like reading other people's opinions and seeing what they think is relevant.

Question 1: Have you considered list posts as a way to create meaningful content in the past?

Yes, learned it from 31DBBB. It can be meaningful if done right.

Question 2: What do you like about reading and writing list posts?

It's easy to read, fast to digest and writing one can actually be fun and I get more response with them.

Here's my list post for today: 12 Unique Facts About Indonesia

I'll answer both questions kind of together since I started writing, then realized I was meshing the answers.

So, I am a TOTAL listmaker in all aspects of life.  I love to make lists of things to do, books I've read, places I've been... whatever!  I think lists are a great way to share information from the silly to the helpful, and I love that they can look so streamlined, neat and organized.  I've written lots of lists on my blog from funny-ish ones like today to ones of things I'm grateful about or feeling joy about.

Here's my list!

10 Things That Are NOT Okay

It's been rattling around in my head, so I finally decided to put some of it down.  Since I love to see what other people are listing, today might be one of my favorite days of the challenge for bloghopping!

Question 1: Have you considered list posts as a way to create meaningful content in the past?

I have a lot of aromatherapy recipes on my website so I guess in a way they have lists for the ingredients and instructions which I know is a 'list within posts' as Darren discusses in Day 2. However I haven't really thought of making a complete post as a list so have done my first one today!

Question 2: What do you like about reading and writing list posts?

Reading a list is so much easier when you follow many blogs as you can skim through at a rapid pace and go back to the ones you want to delve into more. I found writing my first list post quite fun and everything seemed to flow better and was much quicker to write.

Hmmm I thought I did. I wrote a (guest) post with 20 painting tips, but then forgot to put the 20 in the title. Not a smart move. Case in point that blog post titles are important but I guess that is a lesson for another day.

Here is the link anyway:http://www.songbirdisnesting.com/2010/02/my-love-affair-with-paint.html

I have something in mind that would work well as a list post, so I'll get to that later in the week. I'll link up then. With a fresh list post.

As to the questions:

1. Yes I have considered writing list posts (and thought I did). They work really well in search engines or on sites like Stumble Upon. However the format doesn't really let you make it a bit of a personal post either. So I don't like it when people overdo it. Every once in a while when appropriate it is nice, but not one every week.

2. I like the order and scannability of lists post. You see a lot of information quickly. And they save well in my favorites file (no guessing what that post is about). But they don't make me comment very often. Has to do with the lack of personal interaction in most of these posts.

I already wrote and posted my "list" post.

It's drawn from real life and just happens to fit my theme.

14 coffee recipes and 7 other ways to use leftover coffee.

I had no idea how many ways I repurposed the leftover coffee until I wrote this.  I kept pulling it up and adding something after I've been in the kitchen.  It triggered my memories.

1. Yes I've considered writing list posts.  I'm an auto list maker and I tend to think that way already.  In fact, I've got a second list post written tonight too.

My problem with list posts is that I start explaining the items and then it stretches into multiple posts so that people don't become overwhelmed.

2.  I like list posts because it's not so much of a wall of text.  People forget that reading online is tougher than a book. Your eyes wander.

Question 1: Have you considered list posts as a way to create meaningful content in the past?

Yes - I have a few lists started (including the one I posted for this task) but really hadn't taken the time to think how valuable they are.

Question 2: What do you like about reading and writing list posts?

I like to read clear, concise and well organized posts, a list does just that. It's not something I want all the time, but its an easy read!

I think about writing list posts, then go crazy trying to make the list exhaustive!

Secondly, I like lists, but I am somehow let down by them a lot.  Weird :)  But I learn new things! :)

Like one of the other ladies I tend to write lots in explanation and my list posts can tend to become really long - like 10 things We Wish Someone Had Told Us When We Started Graduate School which actually has way way more than 10 things but it is still a helpful post. I wonder if i should split it up? what do you think?

My post, Want to become a better writer? Questions to Ask is a better example of a list post with no explanation.

List posts - especially when they link to other posts within your own blog can function as "sneeze" posts - that's a term from Darren the ProBlogger and help show people deeper layers of your blog!
