Are You a Green Thumb or...Not...

Started by Teaching Tiny Tots , author of Teaching Tiny Tots Blog — 6/22/2012 9:06:27 PM

I can't figure out what I am...I have this houseplant that has lived for 3 years...I'll forget to water...wilts completely...water it and it perks up in a few hours...

I have a blueberry plant that has blueberries and it's in a big pot...without another plant since the second one didn't live.

We have a nursery that we started at our property a few years ago. We went to japan and came back and most of the plants survived beautifully. I think it has a lot to do with the climate and soil it was planted in. We are in Hawaii where there really aren't seasons so it isin't hard to keep up.

Aww thanks...I think my husband may think otherwise lol!! I actually almost threw away "that" houseplant because my husband put it on the deck when we moved and it literally killed it.

I put it in a trash bag....but then thought about it and took it out.  I trimmed off all the dead leaves leaving a pathetic looking version with lots of "sticks".  It is slowly recovering now!

When we moved into our house a couple years ago there was a ficus tree in the corner that was dead so we thought..There was no sign of life,  all the leaves had fallen off..it was dead.  Well I thought why not cut it all back and see what happens.  So I cut it back.  It looked like a 6 foot tall Y.  That's it.  Well with in a month or two new life appeared and it's been flourishing ever since :)

LOL..you just never know..yay for us :)

I can keep a plant alive, but I don't know that that makes me a "green thumb."

I admit to be slightly jealous of your living in Hawaii.  I wish I had a year round temp that didn't change.  I also wish I had SOIL.  We have clay... hard, solid clay that even an hour's worth of chipping away doesn't seem to change.  Ugh!  Though despite the fights I have outside with mother nature and our soil (cough) -I mean cement- I can't grow plants inside either.  My children have dubbed me the "Plant Killer."  When my husband brings a plant home to surprise me, they usually point in my direction and say in an accusing tone, "Don't kill this one, Plant Killer."  In other words, I definitely do not have a green thumb.  I could perhaps have a black thumb, my husband suggests.

I am such a lazy gardener- everything outside dies unless it's already established - I only remember to water the indoor plants, but I couldn't possibly have more than 2 or that wouldn't work out so well, either.

That's hilarious...it reminds me of the two bushes my husband cut back to literally branches.  I thought HOW UGLY!!!  It was supposed to hide the huge ac units.  Well in two months it has flowered and grown right back....not as huge but it covers the units now lol.
