What is the Mimimum Age For a Sitter?

Started by Teaching Tiny Tots , author of Teaching Tiny Tots Blog — 5/31/2012 8:08:32 AM

Just curious....we rarely use sitters and in fact can count on two hands the number of times we have used one in 7 years...

I am hoping that now they are older we might use one for a dinner nite out.

What is the youngest age you would hire a sitter for your kids?  (I know you have to consider the age of the kids...and the sitter's maturity.)

15 is the youngest, but only if they have taken the red cross babysitting training course. The course requirers them to learn CPR and other important info you need to know when keeping a young child.

Most of our sitters are college students or older.

This is such a good question. My daughter is 6 and I have never used a babysitter just yet. I am curious to read what others think a good age is because I am not sure. I would say probably 15 or older.

I did not know about the red cross program.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I think it depends on the maturity and experience of the sitter. Also, if it is someone you know. The best thing to do is to meet with them first. We had to hire nannies when we were in Japan to help us and we always would meet with them first. I always thought it was more about the fit with the family than the age.

I was babysitting at 11.   Now that my daughter is that age, I've never even left her home alone!

She loves little kids and wants to take the Red Cross course.  I told her she could offer her services as a Mother's Helpter (where the mom is home!) once she completes it.
