I made what we call a 'Jesus shelf'. Took a curio shelf - not sure what to call it (a display shelf for knick knacks about 18x24 inches?) - and painted it purple. Sewed up small bags of rich purple velvet with drawstrings of gold cords. Each bag (about 12 of them) holds an item that makes us think of Jesus - sometimes related to His birth (He came), more often related to His earthly or eternal life (WHY He came). Four or five evenings in mid-late December (whenever it works - we have yet to manage a regular schedule for this) we gather in the living room and several children take turns opening a bag. The item gets passed around with discussion of what they think it represents, then various children read the (enclosed in the bag) verses that go with the item and we talk about them a little. It's a very simple ritual, yet one that is treasured by all of us.
Items (and significance) include things like:
a star - Bethlehem star; Jesus as the Morning Star
a gold napkin ring - His eternal, unchanging nature (no beginning-no ending to a circle)
a lamb figurine - animals at stable; Lamb of God-perfect sacrifice
shepherd staff - shepherds at Bethlehem; Good Shepherd
well (from the add-a-piece Christmas villages) - Living Water
votive candle - Light of the World
tiny basin and towel - suffering servant
