Nebby,
For me it's a two fold thing...
(1) how important is this class/activity to demand my time to bring a child to and from it?
(2) is the cost within our reach?
Since moving to a state with charter schools that provide funding for some instructor led classes, it is tempting to go a bit wild and start sending my boys out for all sorts of classes. (Actually, I am seriously wondering what I could offer for other homeschoolers in these charter school programs to maybe earn a little $$ for the family budget.)
In the past, the answer for #2 was almost always no. The boys had wanted to take karate for years, but there was no way we could swing it. That's the one class they are taking now that the charter school reimburses the cost and counts it as PE. ALL three school aged boys are in the same karate class....eldest son wanted fencing instead. But, the answer for #1 was that mom could not do both (as the classes overlapped and were NOT at the same location.) He's happy enough not doing fencing for now and learning karate with his brothers.
Now is the season for co-ops to start up and we are really considering if it will work for the fall. We did one last spring that was a nice mixture of learning opportunities for the boys and gave me a chance to have much needed adult contact. We'll be gone for part of the fall session, hence the possibility we just won't participate. But, come spring it may be deciding between that group's co-op or another one closer to our home. My time is valuable and in short enough supply as it is. And, sometimes I think it is good for the boys to have days without a lot of running around.
