Do you think chivalry is dead?

Started by Tina , author of B 4 U Ask... 2/16/2010 1:56:26 PM
As we look around these days there doesn't seem to be as much chivalry (courtesy and respect) towards others as there use to be.  I believe it's not a lost cause and that we can teach our children to be courteous and respectful.  Our sons are taught to open doors for ladies and pull out their chair and seat them and other such things and our girls to show respect to the guys that do so and to receive these acts.  I was just wondering about your take on chivalry.  Do you think chivalry is dead?

Yeah I think it's pretty much dead. Even the "Christians" I know never think of anyone but themselves. When someone gets hurt or has a tough situation, people don't help, they laugh at them and call them a loser. Nobody keeps promises or brings over casseroles. They just watch you struggle through doors with 5 grocery bags in each hand and a toddler on each hip. Car accident on the side of the road... everyone drives on by while the victims shiver in the cold waiting for the ambulance. It is super depressing. I try to use it to remind myself to be the opposite of that, but sometimes I just wind up depressed from the sheer volume of people that completely lack common decency anymore.

It is sad that even those of us who are suppose to follow in Jesus footsteps seem to have forgotten to show others the courtesy Jesus would have shown.  I do believe that it is up to us as parents to remember to teach our children this dying act of chivalry. Thanks for your response and be blessed.

I think a huge part of the problem is parents not teaching or taking their time to really teach their children. I am so appalled by peoples manners and still abide by all the same respect and courtesy rules i had as a child. I hope to raise my children to be respectful and courteous no matter what!

I do think that the 'feminists' have accomplished a lot of their goals!  There is no need for  chivalry if there is no difference between the genders.  Hogwash!!  I just reviewed a list of ways that my 5 sons can show respect and courtesy this morning!!

Time. People are so busy that they don't value this as important. There are a lot of people that are really deliberate about opening doors, explaining to kids about proper ways etc. But you can't be embarrassed to do it.

Thank you Amanda, Bonita and Melitsa.  I agree with you all.  It does take time and unfortunately feminists have really hurt the cause of chivalry.  I do not believe it is dead but I do think it is a dying act.  If we as parents don't step up and teach our children, it will become extinct.

I'm so glad to hear that there are other parents out there teaching these acts to their children.  Bless you all.
