Vlogs vs. written posts...what do you prefer?

Started by Rachael , author of Too Tutu Cute Mommy 1/7/2011 11:18:01 AM

I've done a few vlogs recently and I'm curious to see what you all prefer?

What do you prefer doing for you blog and what do you prefer to see on other blogs you follow?

I think it depends upon the subject matter.  I'm launching a new cooking series this month and am toying with the idea of doing vlogging for those posts - because it's about basic techniques, and folks who aren't familiar with them may want to see them demonstrated.

Otherwise it's nice to see the face and hear the voice of the person you've been reading from time to time.  I don't follow many people who vlog regularly, but I can see the point of including posts like that if you just want to say hi or tell a story that you don't think typing would do justice to.

I enjoy an occasional vlog, however, I am often catching up on reading while my baby nurses and naps on me so watching a vlog often is't the best nap-wise.  Darren Rowse proposes using both a vlog AND a transcript. I love the idea of having options like that (however,I do know how time-consuming that can be).

That makes sense, I think Vlogging cooking tips would be great Mrs Jen B!  I am on the fence about adding more Vlog's to the website...was thinking of doing 1 weekly Vlog.

So funny Audra because I'm usually holding my baby and found how easy it was to Vlog instead of type!  LOL

I had to google "what is a vlog!"  lol  So I guess I would have to say well written post.  Oh the things one learns on blogfrog!

I absolutely love the written word! :)

I will rarely watch a video that is on a blog.  The reason is that when you read a blog you are in control.  I can take as little or as much time as I want.  I can skim it and save it for later or read the whole thing.

With a video, the blogger is in control.  If it's a 5 minute video I have to sit there for the full 5 minutes.  You can be sure that if it's more than 4 or 5 minutes I will skip it.  I don't have 10 or 15 minutes to sit and ultimately find out it wasn't even information I needed.

I would suggest you give people the option (as Darren does on Problogger) of watching or reading.  You will keep more people interested.

Anne, I never thought of it that way...the blogger being in control vs. the reader.  Great point, that makes a lot of sense!  I like your idea of giving options.  Would you make it into two separate posts or 'write' what you said in the vlog and add it to the same post?

I've watched a few vlogs... but to be honest... oh geez.. this is gonna sound absolutely terrible..

think think think

Okay gonna go ahead and say it

The few I've seen were really more about the blogger thinking themselves so interesting that we'd sit down and watch them for a longer bit of time... Although it was nice to see how the person talks and moves.

I guess what i'm saying is.. make sure you have meaningful content if you do this.. and that the video really is there to serve the content.. not just to see yourself as the star.

If it were me I would do it like Darren does and place the transcript or "blog" portion under the video.  I know when he does it, I always just read the transcription.

He actually has someone transcribe his exact words from the video but I think a written version (i.e. a normal post) of what you are discussing or teaching would be just as effective.
