Advice on purchasing lens for Canon Rebel

Started by Rachael , author of Scientific Nature of the Whammy 12/31/2010 3:04:30 PM
I'm torn. I got the 18-55 kit lens with my Canon Rebel. I have enough to buy ONE extra lens right now. I'm way into macro, so my first instinct was the 55mm/2.5 macro lens. But the 18-250 telephoto looks SO cool too. I don't know what to pick because it'll probably be a while before I can get a third lens. Also need to buy UV filters.  Help!

It is sooo hard to decide what lenses to get (I think!) My favorite all around lens is my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens.

It really depends on what kind of macro work you want to do. You have to consider your subject and how far away would be ideal to get the best shot. You also have to consider how heavy the lens is and where you will most likely be using it.

If you love macro, I would go for that over the telephoto. HTH!

I'm so hopeful that a lot of people will share their opinion. I've had my camera for 5+ yrs (same kit as yours) and have always wondered about lenses that people have used with theirs. I know absolutely nothing about lenses! I would love to have a micro and telephoto lens.

Be sure to watch the speed, too.  I am looking for something around 35-350 (or so) but the speed makes such a huge difference and the lower that number (or faster) the lens the BIGGER the price tag...makes it tough.  One thing I keep reading though is that the lens can be a lifetime purchase whereas the camera body might change ever 2 or 3 years (for me make that at least 5 years) so you really want to put the money into the lens.  In other words don't skimp on the lens...hard to hear when you just want to jump in and get that new lens NOW!!

Other than speed you might spend some time analyzing what you photograph.  Do you do a lot of micro things or do you photograph more scenes, landscapes, etc.?  Just my two cents worth...
