Angry that Marie Claire thinks fat people are gross?

Started by Shayna , author of Life: Forward 10/27/2010 12:17:16 PM

Or so their blog post says - I'm angry.  It's not okay to put out a post that claims that fat people shouldn't kiss in public, that being overweight is the same as being a drug addict, or that weight loss is easy - I already ranted about it on Life: Forward - what do you guys think?  I encourage anyone who is as angered by this as I am to speak out against Marie Claire - and if you subscribe, to cancel your subscription.

I think the person that wrote this had no idea what her words were implying. I understand that she was trying to maybe be "clever" or "sarcastic", but she sounds like a rude snob.

See, I'm more worried that she's hoping we all think she's being clever while she's actually speaking her mind. I don't think she would have crossed as many lines as she did if she wasn't being a rude, insensitive snob!

I totally agree - I think her faux-pology (she even says "perhaps" she shouldn't judge based on superficial qualities --- as if the thousands ofo angry e-mails, tweets, etc. haven't made the point) underlines that she really does feel this way

I am actually shocked that the editors at Marie Claire gave this drivel the go ahead.   Are they hurting for journalists?

Personally, I didn't read anything in the article that I would construe as "clever" so, if that is what she was going for - she was way off base.

I also find it disturbing that she actually said, "

Now, don't go getting the wrong impression: I have a few friends who could be called plump. I'm not some size-ist jerk. And I also know how tough it can be for truly heavy people to psych themselves up for the long process of slimming down. (For instance, the overweight maintenance guy at my gym has talked to me a little bit about how it seems worthless for him to even try working out, because he's been heavy for as long as he can remember.)

I'm guessing that her so-called "plump" friends won't be her friend much longer.   And, I would call her a jerk - not a size-ist one - she sounds like a plain, old, ordinary jerk.

  WOW.  Ignorance is everywhere.

Wow, is this garbage for real? Seriously....

Who the heck thinks that this is ok to put out there. Are morbidly obese people the epitome of health, no. But hey, neither are most of us. Media puts out there these ridiculous ideas of what "normal" is. Can't we be happy that for once there is a depiction of what some of us are like out there to identify with.

Never ever buying that mag again!

Being overweight costs more than any other medical issue, including cancer?  Where did she get her facts/statistics?

I think she was being incredibly insensitive, and while she has a right to her opinion, it's still heartbreaking that people feel that way.  How hard is it to look away if you see a fat person walking across a room?  I'm sure it's a lot easier than said fat person dropping that weight.

But the magazine should never have allowed something like that to run in their magazine or be published on their website.  I will never buy that magazine or read their website again, and the very immature side of me hopes the author of that post gets really, really fat!

Edit:  I may re-think the reading of the website issue, since they ARE running counterpoints to the post now.  I think that's better than just yanking the original article altogether, or letting it stand alone.

I was never a fan of the mag to begin with . . . now even less so!

A popular blogger I followed posted about this yesterday and then I saw it on The Talk this afternoon. I can't believe the nerve of some people. I'm a size 12 and I am trying to lose weight, but there is nothing wrong with being a size 12 or higher. The national average for women is a size 14. Her retraction was crap too. I don't plan on giving my money to a magazine that is so insensitive.

What puzzled me about that post was it was just some sort of angry rant - it wasn't thought provoking at all. What could have been an interesting article/discussion was some knee-jerk reaction - surely they could have found a writer better qualified to approach the topic. But Marie Claire chose to print it so I do think that it reflects poorly on them.

My thoughts exactly!  What bothers me even more about that fiasco of an article is that even though Marie Claire chose to publish it, they'll probably cut all ties with MK by the end of the week.  IMO the real apology should come from Marie Claire!
