What do you want to learn about WordPress?

Started by Amanda Stock , author of Amanda Stock. Website Design and Online Marketing 9/30/2010 4:49:31 PM

Hi! So I've been working with WordPress for years and years. I am starting a video tutorial series on how to use it. Right now I am covering the basics like how to add a post, etc. (which is great if you recently switched or are thinking about switching)

But I plan to get more detailed and show some of the very amazing things you can do with it. I was wondering, do you have anything specific that you want to learn how to do? Let me know and I will create a video about it!

I am loving this idea :-D  I started using it a few weeks ago and like that it's been pretty user friendly. But, I am very envious of people who have pretty little Google and Twitter and RSS feed buttons because it seems like I can't get this on my blog. Boo! I don't find the WP forums very helpful, so maybe you could include a section on how we can add these buttons (the good-looking ones LOL) if we are using .com and not .org.

Very nice idea Amanda, I also have been a wordpress.org blogger for a few years and am actually helping others set up their blogs and this would be a nice addition to send them to.

One of the issues that the new bloggers have is setting up their sitemaps if they are a self hosted blog. A short video on using an FTP to make their files writable would be an asset and I also like Ann's suggestion about the RSS feeds

That's a great idea! I've been considering the switch but I'm not really at the point where I feel like I need to just yet. I'd love to see what other people have to say!

This is GREAT!

I want to switch...I have my domain name...just need a host....but I am ready. But I do not now how to add anything (plug-ins, widgets) or a post for that matter!!

So ANYTHING would be helpful!

I was contemplating switching over but have been pretty happy with Squarespace. My concerns are:

1) Getting all of my past entries on to the new site

2) I will need a new domain name and I'm afraid I will lose what few followers I already have.

Is there a way to redirect people once you have moved?

I want to learn how to write my own theme.  Before my last computer died, I had found a decent tutorial and bookmarked it.  And worked on it.  But the codex doesn't explain it as easily as the site I had bookmarked did.

Writing my own theme would be awesome, but until then I have Weaver 2010. It's pretty flexible.

I would love to learn

  • how to add custom menu buttons
  • how to customize your sidebars and add sections. I'm loving the one wide section on top of 2 columns, but that is hard to get unless I pick a template that has it already.
  • I would also love to learn some basics on coding. Like, if I want my post title to show on an individual page (if you go to funonadime.net and click on one of my posts, you will see what I mean)

Keep me posted. I'll be your biggest fan! =)

For now, if anyone can help me with the post title issue, I would really appreciate it.

I use Atathalupa or how ever the heck you spell it on one blog and Thesis on the other. I have numbered comments on thesis but cannot get it to number the other one. Kind of need to since that's my giveaway blog and it would make life much easier to have them numbered.

Great idea and I'll be watching for more updates.
