Do you do "Theme Days?" - I have questions for you...

Started by Amanda , author of Who Are You Calling Crafty? 8/31/2010 9:43:23 AM

So this morning I decided that I wanted to start doing a "Daily Theme" I thought it would make my life easier and then give me a chance to schedule everything I want to write about.

Here are my Themes:

Monday - Weekend Recovery/Picture/Etc. - Manic Mondays
Tuesday - Recipes/Cakes/Cooking Related Items - Tuesday Treats
Wednesday - Kid Projects - Wild, Wacky, Wednesdays
Thursday - Projects - Treading Water Thursdays
Friday - Stuff - Friday Free For All
Saturday - Kid Projects - Super Duper Saturdays
Sunday - Stuff - Slow Down Sundays

I am going to make cute little buttons because I think it will be fun.  I guess I am curious what y'all think :)

Any feedback is greatly appreciated :)

I guess my questions are:

Does it make it easier for you?

Do you like it?

or Do you wish you would have NEVER started it?

I think theme days are great for 2 days a week, but all week to me is a bit much.  I have 2 theme days.  Wednesday is when I link to various other blogs that have great DIY organizing ideas.  Friday is Fashion Friday where I do reviews of something in the beauty or accessory department.  Otherwise the other 3 days are game for anything.  It leaves me less restricted if I don't have a review one week I don't feel pressured.

Wednesday and Fridays are easier, but also difficult at the same time.  Some Tues nights I have a hard time finding things to post about on Wednesday.  I'm already thinking of this Friday and a little worried.

I understand you wanting the structure but I would definitely leave some space for whatever I feel like posting days.

I agree with Candice, and think any more than 2 is overkill.

I host a Catholic link up on Sundays (Saints and Scripture Sundays). On Thursdays, I like to participate in Mama Kat's writer's workshop if the prompts inspire me, otherwise I participate in Small Successes.

i have three theme days, but only one post on that day is the theme.  meatless monday is a movement outside of the blogosphere, so my first post of the day is a vegetarian recipe.  on wednesday, my second post of the day is a wordless wednesday photo.  and friday is my only original theme day: cocktail friday.  my readership tanks on friday regardless of what i post, so i feel cocktails on a friday is just fun and the only post needed that day.  six of my other posts in a week aren't "themed."

I have a few themes for my blog.

Once a month I choose  a crystal and discuss it in length. Also Once a month I discuss a zodiac sign in length. These are new features

In the past I only had Mondays as a day for guest posts. Mondays are one of the more popular days on my blog, because the guest posts are on a range of topics that are not always related to my niche. However, it sometimes is a little tiring to every monday find a blogger or a topic. I have been doing this since january and a few times I wish I never started it lol. When I have those thoughts I think of the interesting blog posts that my readers get to enjoy.

I agree with everybody above.

Themes are great, for a couple days a week. I usually do a theme for Friday, and that post stays on my site through the weekend.

The downside to themes is that is you write about cupcakes every Monday, and a bunch of your readers don't like cupcakes, or you run out of "awesome" cupcake posts, and start relying on "mediocre" or "crappy" cupcake posts, you can get into trouble real fast.

So, my official vote is: Themes are cute! You should do them, especially if it makes things easier for you. But be ready to change it up, have back ups and break your own rules by throwing the theme out the window once in awhile!

Hi Amanda, isn't it great that  we this this community as a sounding board. I am so grateful for this.

Regarding your question, I also agree with everybody above.

More then two would be so predictable and I think that you would loose some visitors.

Take care and have a great week

I have three themes - a weekly Spiritual Sunday; and two that are posted every alternate week - Wandering Wednesday (links to different sites - follows a theme each week. The current one is fun & games online) and Friday Frame (an image, original artwork, illustration - mine or anyone else's).

If I had to do multiple weekly themes I don't know how I'd manage! As it is, I tend to schedule posts for a couple of weeks, so in case work takes over my life, I'm not left without a weekly post!

When I started blogging, I had a theme day for every day. But, now, I only have "What I'm Worth Wednesday" that I hold to with any regularity.

I do, generally, have certain days where I post certain topics. But, as I have a family and freelance work to manage in addition to my blog, I do what I can and don't worry if I get, for instance, a "health" post on Thursday or my "musings" post on Sunday.

I do have theme days, it helps me focus and it makes for a balanced blog in my opinion. Also if people are interseted in a certain theme they know when it will be posted and can get to those posts.

I think it's important to have a notice somewhere letting people know if you're doing theme days. My schedule is as follows:

Mon: Memories

Tue: Travel

Wed: Haikus (with Jenn)

Thu: Time in the Garden

Fri: 10 Thoughts

Sat: Blogging

Sun: Local Travel

I agree with Candice.  I think they're great for a couple of days, but you want to leave room for spontaneous posts and creativity.  I do find having a couple help to focus you in your niche area and keep you thinking about posting at least that often each week.

Hope this helps!
