Day 30: 17 Statistics To Monitor On Your Blog

Started by Rachael , author of Scientific Nature of the Whammy 8/17/2010 2:22:27 AM

Wow, we are only 1 day away from the end of the 31DBBB Challenge!  It has been an amazing month, I hope that everyone has had as much fun as I have.  After this month, I'm feeling a clear direction and feel like I have more of a plan for my blog - it's pretty amazing.

I've also loved getting to know some of you and your blogs, although my feedreader is starting to burst a little.

The task for Day 30 is to spend time looking at your blog's statistics to see what you can learn from it.  There is a LOT of information in the e-book, but I'll try to pull out some key points.

Key Takeaways:

  • If you haven't done so already, install tracking on your blog.  Wordpress has built in tracking, and Google Analytics is also a popular way to follow your numbers.
  • A few of the statistics Darren highlights are Overall Visitors, Most Popular Posts, Referral Stats, Bounce Rates, Daily/Weekly Trends, and Exit Pages.
  • Don't become a stats addict!  Darren has a huge blog, and he glances at stats a couple of times a day but puts aside only an hour or two a month to go deeper into the numbers.
  • Remember that blogs take time to build, and consider setting exponential goals instead of numerical ones - for example, doubling your subscribers or growing by a percentage each month.

This particular exercise tends to become more and more useful over time.  Problogger recommends using this as a part of your regular blogging routine.

Questions:

1) Did you track your statistics this month?  What did you see?

2) Which statistics do you feel tell you the most about your blog or readers?

Note: To wrap up the 31DBBB Challenge, we'll be hosting another live Q&A Chat with Darren on Thursday, August 19 from 4-5 pm Mountain Time.  If you've got questions you'd like him to answer, head over to the Questions for Darren thread to submit them.

1) Did you track your statistics this month?  What did you see?

  • I have tracked my stats this month, and have seen an increase in my numbers (which is a good thing).  That could also be in part because I started using Site Meter at the beginning of the challenge.  My numbers differ significantly between Google Analytics, Site Meter, and Blog Patrol.  I like Site Meter since the stats are very easy to read, and they send you a weekly summary via email.

2) Which statistics do you feel tell you the most about your blog or readers?

  • I've been paying attention to my popular posts plugin, and have noticed readers seem to respond to my DIY posts the most.  As for actual stats, most people are entering via my home page.  I do know I need to pay more attention to my stats, but find them depressing.  They tend to give me a complex of sorts.  ;)

I use Google Analytics and Sitemeter too.

I go through phases where I'm really into the stats then just glance at it occasionally.

I like to look at the visitor numbers, bounce rate, average time on site, %new visits and the pages/visit.

I also look less often at the main keywords and referring sites too.

I'd really like to learn more about Google Analytics, I've got a couple of goals set up but I'd like to learn more about these.

1) Did you track your statistics this month?  What did you see? I do track my stats every month. I have noticed that my reffering sites stats have gone up this month which tells me I have more sites linking back to me now!!

2) Which statistics do you feel tell you the most about your blog or readers?

I am not to sure about this yet. Though I track my stats I am still learning how to use them all.

I added google analytics this month. I noticed that many of the readers were coming from referring sites - my guess is blog frog. Only a very small percentage was from search engines (this is what I need to work on...badly!). I'm also watching what posts get the most attention - so far recipes are at the top of the list - BUT so is my about page. Knowing that a large number of people are taking a look at my pages means I need to finish working on them.

I would like to take more time to really understand what google analytics has to offer - I'm certain I'm only seeing a very small part of the big picture.

I usually only check my stats when I go to write a new post. As I've said before, if I would be more consistent with my posting, I think my numbers would be a little better.

I have seen a jump since I started the challenge. I do think it has also forced me to be more on top of posting and commenting on other blogs.

It just goes back to putting in the work. My blog has been up and running for a year and a half. I feel like I haven't really broken through the ceiling and created the kind of following I would like. But, it made me feel better that Darren said it can take up to three years.

So, I'll keep trucking along.

1) Did you track your statistics this month?  What did you see?

I totally track! Been using wordpress stats for the everyday fixes, and google analytics for in-depth info and goals. I have learned that my blog has a "pulse" - HUGE traffic spikes followed by plateaus. I still cannot see a trend.

2) Which statistics do you feel tell you the most about your blog or readers?

It's been interesting to discover that days with lots of pageviews actually had fewer uniques than other days with fewer pageviews. I thought they'd go hand in hand.

01: I used the weekly spreadsheet that was created at the beginning of the challenge to track my stats weekly and I noticed some upward trending in visits. The most encouraging stat to watch, though, was my Alexa ranking--steadily improving as *I* improve my blog and am more aware of the focus of the site.

02: The content stats tell me which pages beyond the first page are getting the attention, be it from browsers or search engine hits. Honestly, though, just looking at my dashboard and seeing which posts received the most comments tells me a lot about what is clicking for folks so far.

This is the task I am most interested in. But unfortunately my laptop died last week and I will have to wait until I get home to read about it. We are on semi-vacation.

1) I have been tracking my statistics since I started blogging and while my graph resembles a peaked and valleyed mountain range, the overall effect is a slow increase. So I am pretty happy about that.

2) My favorite stat is time spent on my blog. Many of the visitors stay for only 10-20 seconds. I don't feel that is much use to me. I like the 3 to 10 minute visits and where they clicked and read. What part of my content kept their attention and made them want to keep reading?

I use get clicky for statistics, I have had no luck with google analytics. They also have a plug in for wordpress. I try not to obsess over my stats, I like to know which posts were most popular but listen to my positive comments more.

1) Did you track your statistics this month?  What did you see?

Yep, I've tracked since the beginning. My stats have grown like mad since I've started the Momcomm Monday. I also saw more people are coming from Stumble Upon and Blog Frog. I also see my short URLs clicks are increasing, meaning that more people are clicking on my links from Twitter.

My Alexa rank has grown by 500,000 so THAT'S incredible!

2) Which statistics do you feel tell you the most about your blog or readers?

- Where they come from- this is critical to telling me where to focus my efforts and what's working

- Search engine terms- I look to see how people are finding my site through SEs and where I can improve my SEO

- How long they have been on my site- this lets me know how interested people are!

1) Did you track your statistics this month?  What did you see?   My stats definitely increased this month.  I more than doubled Twitter followers within the first week of this challenge!

2) Which statistics do you feel tell you the most about your blog or readers?  I still feel that I have a lot of work to do as far as gaining readers and followers.  The traffic that I was receiving was from this challenge, and while I think I have gained a few new followers, I will still need to try and keep my traffic up by implementing the tools that I have learned here.
