Day 27: Hunt For Dead Links

Started by Mama Kat , author of Mama's Losin' It! 8/14/2010 10:37:45 AM

Today's taks is to spend some time hunting for dead links and either deleting them or updating them on your blog. If you have WordPress there are some great plugins you can use to do this and Darren recommends a couple in his Ebook. I use (and love) the Broken Link Checker for Wordpress.

Q1: If you've used a dead link finder on your blog before, what were the results? What tool did you use to do this? Did you find it useful?

Q2: How will you manage dead links on your blog going forward?

I do have broken link checker as a plugin but I'll be honest, I haven't tried using it. I do click through my old articles to see them with fresh eyes and be critical about what I can do better so that's how I've checked my links.

Broken links are crossed out on the page so it's easy to catch.

Q2: How will you manage dead links on your blog going forward?

I've learned that small blogs or site go out of business quite frequently so I'm careful about choosing the links. Even large corporate sites take down certain articles or links after a period of time. I've been making notes of these. If I plan to use their articles, I will make a PDF copy and host it on my site to keep the info up.

I also have this issue with government sites when certain info becomes embarrassing so they take it down.

I need to protect my reputation that I'm citing something real.

1 - I've never used something automatic to do this, I have the linkwithin widget and sometimes when I have time I just click in those link and check the links out of random posts.

2 - I'm going to see if I can find a better way to do this on Blogger, will have a hunt around the internet today.

Today's post - Week in Review (and pic of a hottie!)

Q1: If you've used a dead link finder on your blog before, what were the results? What tool did you use to do this? Did you find it useful?

I have never used one before, so I installed one and found 33 broken links over just under 300 posts.

Q2: How will you manage dead links on your blog going forward?

Well, it depends. On the old posts, I'm probably going to leave them. I doubt anyone will go back and read ones from 05 or 06. I will do a few a day...

1. I have never used a dead link finder in the past.  I tried using dead-links.com (as suggested in the e-book), but that turned out to be a dead link.  Funny, right?  So I'm working through checking some old posts, but I'll be honest, I'm too lazy to go through all of them when I have lots of blogs to catch up on reading and commenting.

2.  I'm about to make the move from WP.com to WP.org, so I'll look into a dead link finder plugin then.  I'll keep an eye on this thread for favorite plugins.

Anytime I think of dead links, I always think of my blogroll, which I check OFTEN.  I find so many cool blogs that I want to share that I update it frequently.  I never thought about links in my posts!

Q1: If you've used a dead link finder on your blog before, what were the results? What tool did you use to do this? Did you find it useful?

Just now I downloaded the Wordpress plugin and found 42 dead links....all of which are old comments by bloggers who have changed their site or something similar.  Interesting.

Q2: How will you manage dead links on your blog going forward?

Well....I don't want to delete any comments so I think that as long as they are just comments, I'll leave them as they are.  Oh No...I wouldn't want any of you to click on old comments thinking you'll find a neat new blog.  So maybe what I'll do is go through and take out the hyperlinks. YEAH.

I've set the plugin to run every 72 hours and send em an email when a new dead link is found.

THANKS!  This might be my favorite day so far. LOL

This challenge is full of synchronicity for me. Today, I had on my list of to-dos "check links", and here you are with the perfect tool for it. Thank you so much!

Oops, forgot to answer the questions:

Q1: If you've used a dead link finder on your blog before, what were the results? What tool did you use to do this? Did you find it useful?

I've never bothered; my previous blogs were very organic, and I didn't care if parts of them stopped working. With this one, I care, so I'm about to install the Wordpress tool.

Q2: How will you manage dead links on your blog going forward?

See above. :-)

I had never used it before. So I tried Link Valet. Everything came out OK even though some said 'Assumed OK' so I went and check those myself. I'm sure it would have been useful if I had bad links, but it didn't find any this time around.

Q2: How will you manage dead links on your blog going forward?

I think I'll continue using the Link Valet - It's free - It did a reasonable job, and it was easy to use.

While this sounds like a very good idea that I truly should do, the reality of it is that right now it's not going to happen.  I should try one of those programs that helps you find the dead links.

What I really need to do is write a new post.  I'm going to bop around all of your great sites and see what inspires me.
