Day 25: Ask a Question

Started by Rachael , author of Scientific Nature of the Whammy 8/12/2010 12:12:28 AM

Wow, can you believe it's Day 25 already?  Less than a week is left of the challenge, and it's been a whirlwind, but an amazing one.  I have loved reading everyone's blog posts and seeing all the support here on the forums.  I think a LOT of people have improved their blogs over the last few weeks, and I feel like I've learned so much!

Today's task is to ask a question of your readers.  In the e-book, Darren gives us 10 reasons this is a good idea as well as 12 tips for asking questions of your readers.

Key Takeaways:

  • Asking readers questions can increase their sense of community and participation
  • Question posts can rank high in search engines and generate incoming traffic
  • Ask questions that are relevant to your blog's type and actually have answers.
  • Consider following up your question post with summaries of answers.

Questions:

1) Have you written a question post in the past?  How was the response? (include links!)

2) Have you seen a question post on another blog that got you involved or drew your interest?  What about the post got you interested?

As usual, please try to visit at least one other 31DBBBer and leave a comment!  If you've written a post about today's topic, make sure you leave a link!

I have asked some questions in the past, especially when I do my lists.  If I talk about a good day, I usually ask what was good for my readers.  For my call to action post, I asked people to tell me where they were from.  But I have not written a lot of posts that were JUST for answering a question without me writing a regular post as well.

2) Have you seen a question post on another blog that got you involved or drew your interest?  What about the post got you interested?

I like it when people ask for advice and I'm able to help, I think that draws my attention because it's part of building community and being involved online.

For my post today, I'm REALLY hoping for some help answering my question.  Can any of you help me identify some flowers?  Ask a Question - Flower Identification

Not really. I've ended my post with a little question, just to encourage comments, but I haven't done the whole post as a question.

I can't recall seeing a question post.

1) The only question post I've written was a rhetorical question

Who Else Wants Their Child To Be Lightening Fast at Maths?

It drew some comments and interaction which I'm pleased about but in the future I'll definitely  do a "proper" question post.

2) I've just spent half an hour looking through all the blogs I subscribe to and I couldn't find a question post which directly asked me to answer a question. Hopefully I'll come back here and find some!

1. I almost always ask a question after each blog post, I've had so many more comments since I started doing this. I also did a survey post which I've mentioned before which I suppose is along this idea:

http://www.jadedickinson.com/2010/04/tell-me-about-you-200th-post.html

2. Quite a few of the blogs I follow also ask questions at the end of each post, it create a natural progression through to a comment, so I often comment more when I'm asked something.

For the 31 DBBB, I am focusing on my new blogger blog Positive Kismet and its related twitter account @positive_kismet

1) Have you written a question post in the past?  How was the response? (include links!)

Yes, I have and prefer that format because it helps me focus and stay on point. I don't always do it but I enjoy writing posts framed around a question. I posted a version of the funny post below on my WordPress blog and got lots of great replies.

I am adding the version I posted on my new blogspot blog which got fewer responses because it is still a new blog  in need of growth and support...

I like the idea of adding a summary of the responses to the post later. Great idea!

Things have gotten better since I joined the challenge. Anyway,  I have added the funny post below at the end of this sentence.

http://positivekismet.blogspot.com/2010/06/email-blues-are-you-dinosaur.html

Email Blues: Are You a Dinosaur?

2) Have you seen a question post on another blog that got you involved or drew your interest?  What about the post got you interested?

Gosh.... I am sure  I have but because I have been speeding around trying to catch up and visit blogs as I go along, it's hard to remember off the top of my head.  I have visited many excellent bloggers during this challenge and I will reference one here later.

Usually the question will be on something I feel strongly about or have been mulling over  for a while. The question then becomes prompt to share and explore further. I enjoy reading them.

Thanks,

Eliz

1. Yep, I've recently started writing posts with questions in them, they are an excellent way to engage your reader and make them think about the article you just wrote.

2. I've seen quite a few bloggers posting question posts, and I really enjoy them. I'll comment on them if the questions are clear enough and sometimes if there aren't questions I'll give my own view on the situation :)

I ask lots of questions.  Here is my latest about whether or not all schools should be nut free.

I too think that questions are great because of interaction.  I like to be part of a blog and questions are what helps with this.

I have included questions within my posts like this one: Desperately Seeking Balance but I think I have only written one question post, Rank The Salesman which did not get a response at all. So  I am going to apply Day 21 and Breathe new life into that post!

Actually I did an entire post giving readers input and amnesty for honesty!

To be perfectly honest, I haven't been blogging for very long and I have even LESS exposure to other blogs :( I haven't come across a question post yet..not like that. I've seen posts which ended in a question (which sometimes  annoys me because it seems like only a solicitation for comment and not actually genuine).

Now this is an interesting way to write a post. I've done it before with a funny question in the title. I've asked a question at the end to generate comments (although I forget to do this sometimes). I've done polls. But I don't think I've used this tactic enough in the headline. This is definitely something to consider adding in - and not just for today.

I just looked through my list of 188 published posts. Only 15 of them used this idea of asking a question in the headline.  It creates a different feeling, almost like an invitation, when a question is used.

What Are Your 5 Favorite Roles in Life?

People really thought about this question and left their responses in comments.

Wow! And we still have another week to go. I 'm going back through the 31 days after we finish - more slowly. There's so much to learn!
