Blogger or Wordpress?

Started by Missie , author of Thirsty 8/8/2010 5:05:17 PM

Is there a BIG reason to chose Wordpress or Blogger over each other? I have always worked with Blogger, so I am not too sure what the benefits of Wordpress would be to my blogging.

Please share your insight!

When I started blogging I used Blogger it was the first one I was introduce to. After a while when I decided to go back to blogging, I choose Wordpress. Its dashboard and simplicity was good for me and I stock with it. It does not support some javascript widgets and other, only with the wordpress.org. But overall I'm liking wordpresss.

I blog with blogger, however  I also have a blog with WP.com, both free service. I  like WP because they have built in SEO features. WP.com does not support JavaScript, and I have heard that they now  enforce their no-commercial-content. That could be tricky, if suddenly you don't find your blog any more. I am debating to go with WP.org. which is the paid version of WP. Hope this helps.

Best wishes and good luck

I use wordpress self-hosted.  The power is unparalelled.  I have 100% complete control over my site.  I'm very adept at HTML/CSS/PHP and the ins and outs of Wordpress, so Blogger would only hinder me.

I think Blogger allows people to create some really kick-butt blogs without having to have the technical know-how, which is cool.  I think most people who are technically proficient and serious about their blog are not likely to be using it though.  (This doesn't mean I think everyone should switch over to WP or that people using Blogger are technodolts; not at all!)

There is no paid version of wordpress.   On Wordpress.org you can download the free software to host on your own site.  (This means what you are paying for is hosting, not wordpress.)

Wordpress.com runs the same software with some severe limitations (as you outlined!)  The WP.org software is much more robust!

I was on Blogger and it gave me untold grief. (Google does NOT like me!) I moved to self-hosted WP at the beginning of May and have never looked back! I really really like it! But if you're happy where you are and everything is working ... why go through the pain of making the switch?

For any bloggers with WP that transitioned from Blogger, how easy was the transition? Did you lose comments and/or followers in the process? Or, did you just create a new blog from scratch?

I really like blogger...but I'm switching to self-hosted wordpress this week.  I tried the free wordpress and really liked the posting and esp the SEO stuff they offer.  but I want to be able to do my own ads if I decide to...plus I have my own .com...

self hosted Wordpress, no question.  Terrific plug ins, complete autonomy, google loves it, the love goes on and on.

I'm a very non-tech-savvy, new blogger. I experimented with Blogger last year, but this year started a new blog using the free Wordpress,  The main difference I noticed was that Wordpress doesn't have the nifty "following" feature that Google has, though you can get email subscribers.  But Wordpress has a "blog stats" feature which is pretty darn great.  I can see what other websites people came to my blog from, as well as how many visitors I had each day.  If Google had anything like that, I never figured it out.

I don';t know if that perspective is helpful, since I'm a "noob" and you're not, but just thought I'd chime in!  I've been very happy with the free Wordpress.

I have used blogger for my own blog (5 years) and my work blog (3 years).  Just this summer I switched the work blog to WP - getting other staff on board with blogs, and they're all hosted by our site, not WP.com.  Through these challenges and through this switching process, I've found WP to be a little more difficult to figure out (I found blogger to be very user friendly), but can see that there are more possibilities.

I am happily keeping my own blog with blogger, because it does what I need for that blog, and I'm excited to figure out the WP stuff too.  Best of both worlds.

My own blog is the one linked above, and here is my work blog...
