What To Do With The Haters

Started by Mimi , author of Woven by Words 7/23/2010 7:16:05 PM

Ok, now I know we all come from different places in life. I'm not here to knock anyone or to start a political discussion. You'll understand as I go on...

I have seen bloggers struggle with what to do about people who leave nasty comments about them, their site, their post, their views, etc. For me, I'd proably just delete them. Of course, I'd feel TERRIBLE that someone didn't like me, my site, or what-have-you.

After my first experience with an iPad yesterday, I'm determined to win one because I'll never be able to afford one. I found a site called The Conservative Journal. Yes, I'm conservative. There, I said it.

Anyhow, that's not at all what this discussion is about.

Today I received my first email from them and one of the topics they covered was title "(Hate) Mail Bag:Why Ya Hatin' On Shirley Sherrod"

Now, I have no idea what these people were responding to since I just joined the site yesterday. But, this post was hysterical.

They posted the hater comments for all the world to see and responded to those comments. I thought it was great and in a way, empowered The Conservative Journal. They didn't turn tail and run. They grabbed the haters by the hair and swung them around to their advantage.

As A Side Note: I'm NOT encouraging readership to The Conservative Journal, or promoting them in ANY WAY! Please see that I'm just trying to share an idea of how to deal with haters that we might come across sometime.

I think we can all learn something about haters from Eminem. Just accept that you aren't going to be liked by everyone. In fact, you are going to make some people downright mad. Instead of getting down about it, use it. Grow from it. Rise above it.

I haven't had any "haters".  When I did a post on Marijuana, I had a couple of comments from people who disagreed with my opinion, but they weren't hating & I knew this was a controversial topic, so I didn't delete any comments.  But if I had someone talking nasty about me or my blog, I would just delete them and keep on blogging.

I've seen that type of thing done VERY effectively - but had never considered applying it to blog-haters... what a super idea.

Now if I ever get any hater comments I'll know what to do with them :)

I love that approach!

I wish I could have responded that way when I was a journalist. That would have been fun. I had lots of haters. I figured if I wrote a story and both sides hated me at the end, it was fair and balanced.

I would respectfully disagree with someone privately via e-mail  but  I wouldn't be hateful  and certainly  wouldn't post it where everyone  else  can  see.

Thanks,

You know, I've left messages on sites stating my opinions, but never as a "hater" by slamming that person or anyone else. I might disagree, but I try to be civil about it.

Valerie, I think I'd be totally nervous about even emailing someone.

I think because I'm a blogger I have higher standards for myself, and if it were to become "known" that I was leaving nasty comments on other's sites, it wouldn't bode well for my future on the internet.

Lindsey, I agree that we won't be liked by everyone. That's totally fine. It's just that I've seen other bloggers so hurt personally by comments made by a "simple" post that it makes me want to find a way to encourage them. I mean, Moomettes (sp?) posted about her dislike about the Droid and she had to turn off her comments because so many people were mad at her! So crazy! We can't please everybody all of the time, some of the time, or mostly in my case (at home) any of the time. =)

Laura, I have no idea how I would've commented on your Marijuana post. LOL I have no idea what it was about, but I was taught, "If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all." Now, my friends who know me, know that doesn't always ring true for me IRL, but I try to apply it online.

Denyse, so glad to give you a chuckle. Really, it doesn't matter what your political view is to appreciate the response to the "hate" mail bag.
