Day 4: Analyze a Top Blog in Your Niche

Started by Lynda , author of Daily Window {Photography. Photo Editing. Inspiration.} 7/21/2010 9:59:42 PM

Hi ladies!  It is a pleasure and a privilege to be able to help out in this forum for the duration of this challenge!  Today follows Jen's post yesterday. If you have any questions about how this all works, see Day 1's discussion!

This should be an enjoyable and refreshing task as I imagine most of us love reading blogs in our niche anyway.  I subscribe to at least 100 other blogs in my niche and make a point to read through them regularly.  If you need help juggling RSS feeds, allow me to recommend my tutorial on Managing Your RSS Feeds with Google Reader and Feedly.

Key Concepts for Today: Studying successful blogs in your niche will show you what's working well for them as well as topics they might be ignoring which you could satisfy.  Look closer and see how they implement advertisements or promotions and what their readers are asking about.  It's important to note you don't want to copy another blogger.  Be unique, but allow them to inspire you!

Questions:

1) Which of the areas discussed in today's task are you most interested in studying about your niche and why?  (These areas are Content, Reader Engagement, Design, Monetization, Traffic and SEO)

2) What's one thing you could do to improve your blog after studying the top blogs in your niche?

If you've written a blog post today, please be sure to leave a link.  OR feel free to link from a post in your archives that was inspired by another blog you read in your niche!

Bonus!

I've organized a feed and syndicated blog of ALL the #31DBBB participants.  I'm asking for YOUR HELP to create smaller feeds for your niche(s).  Please take a moment to fill out this survey and choose up to three categories (or "Other" and I'll create one) to add your blog(s).  See the full thread for more information and a list of all the blog and feed links by Niche!

Please note, adding blogs to the categories needs to be done manually, so it might take up to 12 hours for your blog to be added to the feed.

1) Which of the areas discussed in today's task are you most interested in studying about your niche and why?  Since I dream of publishing a book someday, I am mainly interested in the more "practical" aspects: monetization, traffic and SEO. So of course I keep an eye on Dooce!

2) What's one thing you could do to improve your blog after studying the top blogs in your niche? I need to improve my standing with Google and get better search terms. I'm reading LOTS about SEO and dreaming of keywords!

I wrote a silly post today, and also published my first (and probably last) poll ever. Would love to hear your opinions!

I've been analyzing movie blogs but I write reviews on everything: movies, books, music, and TV. I've had a hard time finding ones that have all, maybe that's what I offer that no one else does? Let me know if your blog covers any of these topics because I'd love to stop by. I'll post my general link today so you can take a peek at my variety. Do you think it's too much?

Is it fair to say traffic and SEO? These two seem to boggle the heck out of me. I'm hoping the monetization will come with the growth.

2) What's one thing you could do to improve your blog after studying the top blogs in your niche?

Sadly, the two things I want to know more about and increase, traffic and SEO, are such new topics to me I don't know what to do with the information I see other than feel really, really intimidated. I'd sure love to see some tutorials on how to break these things down. Alexa had NOTHING on me other than the blog name so it was really hard to compare. Compete told me a lot about the sites I like, but had squat (and conflicting info with my Google Analytics info) too.  Maybe my blog is too new. Sigh.

You might want to subscribe to the "Blogging" niche in the thread mentioned in the original post.  Blogs about Blogging (like Problogger) frequently write tutorials on SEO and traffic analysis!

Question 1: Which of the areas discussed in today's task are you most interested in studying about your niche, and why? (These are content, reader engagement, design monetization, traffic & SEO)

I have been keeping many of the blogs in my niche in my RSS feed to study them further.  I am especially curious about those that are quite successful.  I look at their comments to see what people are saying which helps to find out how the readers are engaging with the blog author.  A lot of times I see the same people commenting, which means that author as a following.  This increases their traffic, which is another thing I study other blogs for.  Readers are also more likely to follow you on Twitter and retweet you about your newest post on your blog.  My next focus will be studying them for how their SEO is doing.

Question 2: What's one thing you could do to improve your blog after studying the top blogs in your niche?

I'm still a bit new in trying to become a successful blogger, but I'm finding that the more you interact with other bloggers the more likely they are to interact with you.  Right now my focus is finding thoughtful blogs and leave comments there often.  I feel this will bring more traffic.  I'm at the beginning stages of SEO, so I feel like that is a huge portion of what I need to learn.

I think lately I've already been studying content. I think it all of a sudden just started happening. I know I want to come across a certain way on both of my sites, but how to do that, is the question! SEO is still something that is beyond me. I will take your advice to Heligirl and check out the Blogging niche.

 2) What's one thing you could do to improve your blog after studying the top blogs in your niche?

I haven't had a chance to study the sites tonight, but will try to tomorrow. I think how they monetize would be the biggest think I could learn from studying their sites!

Again, I won't have a post up until late today (Thurs), if at all. It's just a crazy week and I'm so far behind on everything Blogging! LOL

I was more interested in learning about SEO, and I still have a lot to learn in that area. Also Reader Engagement is another area I'm looking into more now.

Well I took the step and registered my blog with Technorati, other than that I think I need come up with better posts ones that can draw people out to participate.

I think that tomorrow I will do this exercise again with a different blog, while the one I chose was a top ranked one in Technorati I think that I need to look at a bigger fish so to speak this ones was really pretty similar to my own.
