Day 1: Write an Elevator Pitch

Started by Nirvana Mamma , author of nirvanamamma.com: 7/18/2010 11:59:35 PM

Let’s get this blog par-tay started!!!!  Can I get a woot, woot?  We’re over 400 ladies strong and it’s gonna be a fun ride, ya’ll!

How this is going to work:
Each night, before midnight PST, one of your #31DBBB community leads (including me, Mama Kat, Jen, Lynda, and Rachael) will initiate a discussion within the SITS Girls BlogFrog Community.  These discussions will be easy to spot!  Just look for Day X and the name of the activity in the title.  All discussions will include a summary of key concepts and questions for you to answer.

What we’d like you to do:
Answer the questions & spread the comment love!  Each day, after responding to the discussion prompts, visit the blogger who posts directly before you.  This is what will keep the discussion going and help everyone gain knowledge from others’ experiences.  Plus, being a supportive SITStah rules!

When playing along on your blog, feel free to link back to our initial Roll Call in the BlogFrog.  We’ve included the code for our official button if you want to grab that too.

Just copy & paste the following code into your blog or website:

<a href="http://www.theblogfrog.com/757946/forum/39640/roll-call-for-the-problogger-summer-challenge-here.html"><img src="http://www.thesitsgirls.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/sits_problogger_banners_badge.png" alt="" /></a>

What’s in it for you?
Besides learning from the master (aka Mr. ProBlogger) and kickin’ it with some other really amazing women bloggers, there’s plenty more in it for you!  Each Saturday, for the duration of the challenge, SITS will be posting a weekly wrap up on their blog. These posts will highlight the great discussions and stand out posts happening around the blogosphere.

We’re also planning live chats for all participants and community leads each Wednesday from 6:00-7:00 pm PST in the BlogFrog, as well as a live discussion with Darren Rowse himself!  More details will be announced on the SITS Facebook fan page and through the SITS Twitter account soon, so be sure you are following along.

Finally, have you read about the truly blogalicious grand prize giveaway that BlogFrog is hosting for anyone who completes the challenge?  Stay with us for 31 days and you’ll be entered to win a Sony Bloggie Camera.

Awww yeah!  Let’s get it started…

Day 1 Task:  Write an Elevator Pitch for Your Blog

Key Concepts:

  • Doing so helps to focus your blog.
  • Good to have different lengths of pitches.
  • Try to solve a problem or need.
  • Define your audience and keep it clear, short, and intriguing.
  • In creating the pitch, brainstorm keywords related to your blog.

Questions:

  1. What is your short elevator pitch?
  2. Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

Be sure to leave a link to your post so that others can visit!

The link to my groovy-good Day 1 post is HERE

1. What is your short elevator pitch?

Inspiring women to live with passion, joy, and purpose.

2. Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

This task completely blew my mind!  It changed my blog from being me-focused to reader-focused which will help me connect with readers so much more.  I’ll be inspiring others to follow their bliss instead of rambling on and on about me following my bliss.  Who cares about me, right?

And I’ve already found that I’m able to write posts easier because I have a goal to aspire to.  But, now I’m a little freaked out about having a purpose and a goal.  Because what if I can’t do it?  Fear sucks…but I’m excited to get started!  Woo hoo!

This seriously rocked my bloggy world.

  1. What is your short elevator pitch?

Tagline: Heligirl: Positive Discipline Mommy

Short Pitch: Humorous mommy blog dedicated to sharing positive parenting tools that help develop capable, happy, secure children.

Slightly longer pitch:

How do you raise children today with the security and self esteem to combat the peer pressure of instant gratification, social media and an ever shrinking planet? Impassioned by positive discipline, I share tools, articles, advice and first hand experiences of this positive parenting philosophy that encourages raising capable children through cooperation, respect and connection rather than punishment. I often spin my tales with witty humor, complementing parenting posts with fun glimpses into the full crazy of my family life in a way that speaks to my readers and keeps them coming back for more. Readers can really relate to Heligirl. They come for the parenting advice and stay for the friendships they develop with this helicopter pilot turned mommy with a mission.

I’ve been fairly focused on this brand for a while, but what I think this exercise did do was help me focus on how I could do it and better and more clearly express my goals with the blog. I do post a lot about humorous daily mommy stuff, but often the most response I get is when I write a positive discipline article or share my experiences with using this parenting technique. This exercise reminded me to keep that focus.

1. What is your short elevator pitch?

Established blog dedicated to beauty,  reporting on the latest trends and tips in the world of skin care, hair, and makeup with an original and realistic viewpoint. Dedicated to bringing the finest beauty information to the consumer market.

2. Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

This actually helped me focus a bit on that literal question of "so, what do you do?" and have a short answer without falling all over myself. Very helpful.

I'm actually not posting this work on my blog, as it's not relevant to my subject matter. Instead I'm keeping an ongoing "workbook" file on my desktop.

I decided to put my day 1 post right into my about me page.  You can see it here.

1. What is your short elevator pitch?

Embracing and being embraced chronicles the true (and only slightly exaggerated) story of how one single mom embraces the uncomfortable, joyful, overwhelming, spectacular, painful, fantastical, fleeting moments of life and lives to tell the tale.

2. Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

Yes, it did.  This task has reminded of why I started blogging in the first place.  It has forced me to be more centered and focused.  This was definitely a difficult task for me.  I tend to be somewhat of a perfectionist.   What a great exercise to kick this thing off with!

Being newlyweds, and living to blog about it!

Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

Yes and no...my blog has been evolving for awhile now...our life as newlyweds and all that comes with it has been more of the focus for some time now...I want to connect to readers, but I want to be real to me as well...I hope that makes sense!

What is your short elevator pitch?

Crunchy Betty is a fresh, humorous look at an age-old art: using homemade remedies for skincare, haircare, and health to achieve a more naturally blissful life.

Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

Not really. I feel like I had a pretty good handle on what my blog was about before this (if you'd have asked me two months ago, the answer would be WAY different).

However, it was a challenge to get it all into such a small pitch, and really feel like it represented my blog. I'm still not sure if it does, but I think that's because I already have more in mind for growing Crunchy Betty, and I was trying very desperately to fit the WHOLE concept into my elevator pitch already, even though I'm not there yet.

I love having a short pitch, though, that was well thought out (and so much easier to edit than the millions of words in my head).

1. What is your short elevator pitch?

I’m surviving life with one in high school and one in Kindergarten, while I find myself living one day at a time.

2. Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

Not really, though thinking about it and coming up with the elevator pitch showed me how crazy and chaotic things really are in my life and in my blog since my blog is about my life. I think its time to take both in hand and simplify things all the way around. I guess I need to finally decide what I want to be when I grow up.

1. What is your short elevator pitch?

This blog is aimed at parents of high-functioning autistic/Asperger kids. I want to celebrate the uniqueness and strengths of our kids.

2. Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

No, this elevator pitch was already on my blog. I haven't read ahead to the rest of the challenges, but I suspect this will be the only free ride I get! LOL! When I started my blog, this was the main purpose of my blog, and I've always had it up. However, I don't always stick with it in my posts. I've had many a post of bitching and whining about my daughter and not celebrating her quirks. I figure that's okay. It's honest and how I feel on some days.

My post is here

1.  What is your short elevator pitch?

I am documenting my way through the race of life as a working mom while betting on the trifecta of my top three priorities - my family, my faith and enjoying life

2.  Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about about your blog?

Yes, it helped me pinpoint a bit more on what I want my blog to be.  I love entering photo carnivals but looking at what I want my blog to be, means maybe linking to fewer contests and writing something more concrete than just submitting a photo.

1. What is your short elevator pitch?

Mega-short: Parenting, one fail at a time.

Just short (and still in progress): Single parenting is dirty, exhausting and a lot of fun! I'm a single mother who is doing everything wrong, but enjoying (and blogging) every bump in the road.

2. Did completing this task change your blog, or change the way you think about your blog?

Not at all, but it was good to sit down and try to merge all the snippets of "tell us about yourself" into one. Which I'm still not sure about, but I'm an editor - I am never satisfied ;)
