Are you a safe blogger?

Started by Michelle , author of blissful babble 6/17/2010 5:59:30 PM

My mom called me and told me she does not think its a good Idea to have a blog.  With all the wierdos out there, they might see a photo of my kids and track me down.

I'm very safe but not over the top.

I don't post my last name (even tho its super common so I'm not worried about that anyway)

I make sure I don't use photos showing my car's plate # or my house #, don't use my kids school name or anyother personal info.

However I don't use cute "fake" names for my kids, I use thier real names.

I Don't watermark my photos...(don't know how and think It would take to much time)  But  I've heard of some bloggers having photos of thier kids used on other sites and strange stuff like that

I don't know how to turn off "right click"

How worried are you about being safe?

Is my mom just nuts or am I? ;)

.I want to be smart...but its not like I'm a super blogger or anything.

If you are on the WordPress there is a plugin that you can use to disable copy/past and right click...also if someone saves your pictures they will actually save only blank white background. For Blogger I'm not sure.

I am pretty safe ;) or at least I like to think that LOL I don't really share pictures of my daughter, her room, art, and things like that yes, but not her. I also don't post her name, mine yes. I also share state we live in but not the city :)

I have posted a couple of pictures of my daughter ( but she grows so fast and changes in the blink of an eye, I'm not too worried)...but I don't think I've ever used her name (I'm one of those annoying ones who use little nicknames). I don't come right out and say my name and I don't say where we live or what my husband does for a living. Heck, I don't think I even use my husband's name.

I think as long as you keep most things private, you will be okay. Obviously no pictures including street address, school names, etc.

My parent's have worried a lot about the privacy of my blogging also.  I never show kids faces, and I use close shots of things.  I had someone comment that my blog was evasive.  Yes, it is.  A 21 year old wedding photo and only my first name are all that I reveal.  And With the kids, yes, i reveal that I have 7, but that's all.

To each her own.  But, I am careful.  As a genealogist I ahve used my genealogy resources to find old friends.  You'd be amazed at how easy it to find out.  (Not that I personally go looking...)  For example what someone paid for their home, why they got their divorce, and waht brand of T.P. they stock their bathroom with.

I enjoy being part of an olnline comminuty of interests, but I deserve the level of privacy that I am comfortable with.

I reccomend an online set of info birth dates, names, etc. depepending upon your level of comfort or lack of.

Early in my hanging our online I was tracked down.  Thankfully it was by someone who was okay.  But, what if she was not?

You have to decide.

To each her own.

i don't think disabling right click really does any good. anyone who wants to save your photos could just screen shot them and anyone who wants to do creepy stuff with them isn't going to care if they're watermarked or not.

I've only been blogging for a few months, but at the beginning I was very evasive.  As I have become more comfortable, I have relaxed a bit....but I still don't mention names, exact ages, school names, hubby's name, town, etc....and my Facebook personal page is friends only, so if someone manages to link to that I think it's still safe.

I find that the more unfamiliar people are with blogs in general, the more worried they are about safety.

Well, I don't have any children. But I don't post anything too personal on my blog, and nothing anyone would be able to use negatively.

When I post pictures on my blog, I am always sure to watermark them by using Picnik by just simply putting my blog name on them. If you head on over to my blog you will see what I am talking about. I also never use my last name either. My thing with anything on the web, is that if I would not want my grandmother to see it, then I do not post it!

I think you are being a safe blogger.

You just have to be you. if you are on a blogger platform, and you feel you are being stalked you can always make your blog private and invite your friends there.

I have a private family blog and a public blog.

I post pictures on family blog and just the zany and wild things I do on my other blog.

Sometimes a picture of my kids slip in on my public blog. But I'm not worried about it. I never reveal my exact location either.

:) You can never be too safe though.

Haha, I guess I'm the odd one out.  Sure I'm not going to post my apt number or direct address, but I do share photos, and names, I believe the only thing to fear is fear itself.  and really if a hacker was looking for you.... He'd find you IP addressess...can be a scary thing.

I was harassed once online, had a hacker take over one of my chat accounts... it was not a fun ride, and then I was using a fake name,

so really what I have to say is this - it's all about your niche.  If your a mommy blogger then your going to attract other mommy bloggers - so you really dont have to worry - if your into something a little more *skiddish* then expect the worst.  Its all in where your at.

...but if your running a pet store, what's your likelihood of getting robbed opposed to being a convenient store, liqueur store or bank? think about it.

I have not put much thought into this so I benefited from the above replies.
This is certainly something to be aware of.
