Wordpress Tutorials and help, PLEASE??

Started by Byn , author of Beans Monkey Business 1/29/2012 8:21:34 PM

I just got a domain and started a wordpress domain.  There are a few things that I can NOT seem to figure out.

Some of these are probably REALLY stupid questions:

RSS feed???  What is this and how do I find what mine is?

How do I get the plugins for 'related posts' to show up at the end of my posts?  Someone gave me a way to use a plug in, but I can't even find how to get a plugin ON wordpress.  HELP??

I want to start doing some give aways once I get enough followers on my blog, but I can't even figure out how to find how many followers I have (maybe because I just don't have any yet???)

My blog is an odd niche because its for a children's web series and we are JUST getting started.  I really want it to go over well because its something that my kids and I are doing together... so it just feels extra... special to be able to all work together.

Thoughts?  Tips?  Tricks?  Is there a "Wordpress for Dummies" out there somewhere?  What are your best wordpress tips?

I guess I should have gotten this all figured out BEFORE I tried to do the 31 Days to a Better Blog:(  I need a "31 Days to a Basic Blog"!!!

First things first: the only stupid question is the one you don't ask--so none of these are stupid :)

Okay, RSS Feed. On a self-hosted wordpress blog your feed is most likely "yourdomain.com/feed" fairly straightforward.

The RSS feed is how folks can subscribe to your blog using a feed reader (like Google Reader) or email (if you have that side set up). It means that whenever you post, they get notified without having to constantly check your site.

As someone who reads almost exclusively through a feed reader (it's the only reasonable way to keep up with the 200+ blogs I follow) I highly suggest you make this available to your readers. Using the Feedburner plugin makes it very simple.

And speaking of plugins. On your dashboard you want to go to the Plugins tab on the left side of the dashboard and click on Add New. Then you can search for the name or keyword of the plugin you want, click to install it and then activate it.

Some will have features you have to set up (and will tell you that once you activate it), others will just work automatically. (The other way involves uploading the plugin files via FTP, but this is only necessary if the plugin hasn't been added to the vast amount of approved plugins already available.)

To find out/track how many followers you have, I suggest using Google Analytics. There are loads of tutorials about it (including a recent one on SITS if I'm not mistaken) out there.

Good luck!

Are you serious?  Wow.  That was simple.  I don't know why it seems so hard with all of the googling I did:)  Thank you!

And thank you for everything else, now I'm going to go experiment and see how good I am at taking advice...

Wow.  I finally found out that it was a problem with Chrome.  I had to install something in order to be able to see it in Chrome, but it worked in IE.  Thanks for all your help... I think I got them worked out.

I keep seeing this "go to your plugins tab" everywhere... but I don't see anything on my dashboard that says plugins!  I have looked and even had my kids look in case I was just being really blind... how am I missing this?

Hmmmm....

Wait... do you have a WP blog through wordpress.COM or a self-hosted WordPress blog?

If it's the former, you may not be seeing a Plugins menu because wordpress.com restricts what plugins you can and cannot use. If you have a self-hosted WP blog, though, you should see something like this when you log into your dashboard:

I believe its self hosted, but the 'plugins' thing definitely isn't there for me.

I think Scraps is onto something here.

Sorry---I didn't get the notification that there was a new post in this thread!

If you don't know for sure if it's self-hosted that might be a sign that it's not. If it's self-hosted, you're paying someone to host it for you on their servers--most people are pretty sure if they're spending money or not!

Your blog footer says "Blog at Wordpress.com" so I'm thinking that you're using the free hosting via wordpress.com. In which case, you may not have access to any plugins other than what come pre-installed. Sorry.

Well I know I'm spending money, just not sure of terminology:)  My husband set up the domain name and whatnot... I'm going to send him the links because I am a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff.  I'm the creative person in the family, not the technical brains.  My eyes were crossing reading the link that was posted.

Thank you for your help!!

Registering a domain costs money--usually $10 a year--but just gives you the name. Hosting is usually monthly fee (though many hosts offer a slight discount if you pre-pay a year at a time, for example) and is totally separate from registering a domain.

Many hosts offer registration services (which is nice, since you can order your domain and hosting at one place and then they'll remind you when it's time to renew the domain, too), and some will include a free domain registration with the purchase of hosting, but you have to have both in order to have the fullest use of WordPress or any other web thing out there.
