Loving Scripture Memorisation

Started by Jeanne , author of A peaceful day 5/6/2010 6:07:41 PM

I've been pondering these words from my friend, Trisha's blog, A Multitude of Mercies:

But hiding God's Word is not only and simply memorizing it. The Word should not only be part of your memory, it must also be part of your "affections," as John Gill explains. It is "preserved in his heart as a choice treasure, where it might dwell richly, and be of service to him on many occasions; and particularly be of the following use; that I might not sin against thee.." for the Word of God "is a most powerful antidote against sin, when it has a place in the heart."

Trisha's point, that we must make the memory verses we hide in our hearts part of our affections, is the challenge I face with my daughter daily. I can teach her memory verses and passages.  I can help her remember, but how can I help her to love what she's learning?

How do I stop the teeth gritting and irritated sounds of frustration emanating from her young lips when we come to Scripture Memory on our timetable?

How do I help her to feel that the Scripture she has hidden in her heart is a 'choice treasure'?

Any ideas?

My kids hated this [well, still do hate it!] but we got it done pretty well at Jemima's age thru Christian School which did the verse as penmanship practice and then said it for the teacher on Friday--that worked, but few were really "learned."  However, one thing that Bethie loved at that age [even older age actually] were the tapes [now cds] from Thy Word Creations. I'm not an affiliate or anything--they were just nice tapes, with a coloring book that she usually skipped. It put it on for her at bedtime and just kept turning the tape over till she was out cold! It worked!!  I haven't listened to any of their teen ones so I can't say what they are like. I can still sing Psalm 91 though & so can Bethie! Another helpful resource [again, no affiliation] was Marilyn Boyer's  Hands-On Character Building ideas she has a book or audio. Most are for younger children, but some may still be good. The Boyer's own www.thelearningparent.com [again--no affiliation] and also sell their own Flash Card sets with Scripture. I occasionally have found ours in the bathroom, stuck in books, used as extra playing cards, etc AS WELL AS having had a few conversations based on one kid or the other saying "Is this true" and showing me the card! Well worth the money!! We also liked their Proverbs People book it was a nice easy lesson and you can make a shirt, quilt square whatever with the design for the character trait covered. The Boyers are/were ATI/IBLP/Gothard, but sell nice stuff and offer decent service.  Kind of a commercial here! Sorry!

Hello! I'm new here but thought I'd jump in. Scripture memory has been on my mind a lot lately.

Scripture memory has always been a part of our home school curriculum. My kids haven't always enjoyed the memorization part.

What I've noticed about my kids however is that they do pay close attention to what my husband and I do. The more serious I become about my own personal Bible study, I've noticed they take their own personal Bible study times more serious.

I've recently decided to memorize the book of 1 John. In order to practice I ask them if I can quote it to them as they read along and check for mistakes I might make. I am curious to see if this decision of mine to memorize 1 John will cause them to want to memorize more scripture on their on time and not just for school. Time will tell!
