Kitchen Prep Days - What are your tips?

Started by Kelly , author of Faithful Provisions — save money. live generously. 5/3/2010 3:45:32 PM
I LOVE my Kitchen Prep Days! It is an opportunity for me to get lots of things prepared for snacks, side dishes and even premade freezer meals.  I only spend about 2-3 hours each time I do them (which is just once a month), and it saves me way more than that in the peace and planning department.

I have found the key is planning. I plan ahead of time what I will be making and make a quick grocery trip. Then, I think through how to make the most use of my time while in the kitchen.

For instance, I often use my dough cycle on my bread machine.  So that is always the first thing I do...Get the Dough ingredients into the breadmachine.  Then I start on something else that can go into the freezer or oven while I am prepping again, and so on.

So, what are your tips to having a successful Kitchen Prep Days

First timer and never done one?  What would you like to know?

Since herbs are beginning to put on a lot of growth, it's time for my first harvest.  I cut, clean & dry the herbs (mint, sage and rosemary at the moment).  Then I whizz them with a little oil in my food processor (blender works too!).  I fill an ice cube tray with the herb paste and pop it into the freezer.  When the cubes are frozen, I put them in labeled bags for use later!

I freeze individual herbs & I make my own blends (Italian, Tex-Mex, Provence, etc.).  I prefer the flavor of these to that of most dried herbs.

It is such a blessing to flavor foods throughout the year with fresh, flavorful herbs!

I've never done a kitchen planning day. I feel like I'm always so unorganized.... but would DEFINITELY like to make changes for the better in that area. I'm the person who is often called on to do something last minute, so when I've tried to plan my days to do household work, or to get my grocery lists/coupons together, or go to the store, something ALWAYS comes up. I do appreciate the ability to minister to others though when they have no one else to call on.... but would LOVE to have more order to my home.

I've never done a prep day, but think it's a great idea. Being on the go all the time with 3 kids, this would be a big help. Can't wait to see the ideas everyone posts.

I've never done a prep day. It sounds impossible with three kids. Maybe I will have to pass this prep day information over the hubs.... he does all of the cooking!

I've never had a day or afternoon that I cooked all day multiple things.  I know it would save so much time, just setting up a day that I can do it without the 2 kiddos running around would be the most difficult task.  I WILL do it sometime in the near future!

Never done a prep day before. That sounds like the next level of organization I'd love to get into! but don't think I'm quite up to the task yet....but what a goal!

I use to do kitchen prep meals, but for some reason I stopped. I really need to get back into the habit of doing it though, it really saved me a lot of time during the week. Maybe once summer break comes I'll start doing it again.

I've never done prep days either but I want to learn more.  I checked out one of your posts but stopped when I read "flash freeze."  What IS that!?  I'm going back to read more tonight (when I'm not at the office) and note some ideas to try out.  But seriously, I think I need the beginners version.

My house stays clean and I can whip up a mean microwave cake, but when it comes to cooking, I'm definately a novice.

I've never done a true prep day, but I always have herbs growing in my backyard and we have lots of fruit trees which makes it easy to go out and pick what I need when I need it. I love to entertain so I always start prepping 3 days in advance. I come from a food/restaurant background so I picked up a lot of tricks of the trade and can make most dinners within 30 minutes. I try to be organized and I always plan a weeks worth of food on Sundays.
