I"m a Lucky Girl- Sliding Door to hide the TV!

Started by kim , author of Todays Creative Blog 3/9/2012 12:00:10 AM

Some of you might not know my aversion (neurosis) to seeing electronics, like TV's in my living space.  Don't get me wrong, I love TV, I love watching TV, but I don't want to see my TV if I'm not watching it.  This whole TV over the mantel thing with the new flat screens is enough to send me into the decorating looney bin. This is MY problem. This is my own opinion.  I know many of you probably decorate with the TV on the wall or above your fireplace and that's alright.......but I can't handle it.  CAN'T!  It's like fingers on a chalk board for me. I loved having my armoire with my TV inside. We had a 32 inch TV and it was perfect.

I made the mistake of telling my husband that we needed a new TV for the bedroom. Well those words to a man mean "go buy the biggest tv you can". So on Christmas morning I opened up a very large box with a 50 inch TV inside.  It suddenly threw me into an anxiety fit.  It was too big for the bedroom........unless we considered putting in the hall way and opening up our double doors to view from our bed.  Not!

My husband decided to measure the hole above our fire place that had been covered up for years with my antique shutters.....and it fit!  Of course.  So the TV now had a home and my black distressed armoire with our 32 in now has a home in our bedroom. (which does not match and has created another issue) I told my husband we could leave the TV above the fireplace ONLY if we could figure out a way to hide it.

We decided to use my antique shutters and make a sliding "barn door" type of cover. Love it!

I still have some decorating to finish up, but the TV is now hidden when it's not in use and I am LUCKY to have a man that not only is handy, but one that entertained my TV neurosis.  I am SO lucky he could make this himself because the barn door ones I had picked out online were over $500 just for the hardware.  This cost us about $50 in supplies!

I'm a lucky girl!  I'd be even luckier if I could figure out how to clean the inside of that fireplace.

Now, tell me about the last time good luck was on your side?

Dude that is awesome. Being able to get away with hubby this weekend is super lucky, especially that we had a babysitter. Double lucky! ;-)

Luck was on my side this past weekend, when I flew across the country without any trouble! That's always a blessing! Love that tv hidden away! Shared!

I'm just like you, refuse to have a big screen TV the centerpiece of my living room. We don't even have one, still have the small old box one in the liviing room of which our boys are deeply ashamed when they have friends over to play the wii. We finally broken down and got a small flat screen for the bedroom, but that was before the boys could care less what size/ kind of TV we have. I still stick to my guns. Never been one to want to measure up to the Jones either (we still have the original formica kitchen in our house and proud of it! :))

Oh my gosh! Have I got a good luck story for you! My husband and I were relocating from Arizona to Michigan. We didn't have time to go to Michigan to find a home so I got a referral from my cousins friend for a realtor in the area we were moving to. I called him, and he said he'd look for what I wanted and call me back in a few days. He had a guy call me back who was going to be selling his house but would consider renting it if we were interested. After talking to him and his wife we decided to go for it and agreed to rent their house. It is such a blessing!! This house has everything I have ever wanted including a backyard garden with grape vines, raspberry bushes and a huge strawberry patch! I am one lucky girl :)

When I was in 8th grade, I was in a spelling bee. I was so nervous, because I hate being in front of large groups of people. As they were calling the kids to the stage, I said, "Wait, mom! One more. How do you spell 'fluorescent?'" And on the tie-breaker for 3rd and 4th place, the winning word was FLUORESCENT!!!

And I have shared this contest with all my FB friends :o)

I'm not actually trying to win anything - I just had to comment and say that that is an awesome idea beautifully executed! David

I LOVE what you did here, the shutters are perfect, and I am EXACTLY like you with the electronics showing...seriously...nails on a chalkboard that it is the focal point of so many rooms. Yours is great!
