Do You Use Coupons? Here's My Method

Started by TheMenuMom , author of The Menu Mom | Recipes | Menu Planing 4/17/2010 2:59:13 PM
So the debate is out there... do you use coupons or not?  Some say using coupons causes them to spend more money, because they end up buying things they wouldn't normally buy.  Others are coupon-aholics.  Where do you fall?

Here's what I do...
I'm a member of The Grocery Game - LOVE LOVE LOVE it! You sign-up by store - so say CVS, Walgreens, & Meijer are my memberships - each town has their own store options. (by the way if you sign-up, I would love if you use my email as a referral - christine@dinewithoutwhine.com)  Anyway, then they tell you what is on sale that week, and what coupons to put with it to make it even cheaper.  This leaves you sometimes with items at 75-90% off, or sometimes even free!  If there is something I use.. (I don't buy it just because it is on sale) then I will usually stock up - BIG TIME!  Why not buy 5 when they are 75% off instead of 1 when I run out and have to pay full price?   Then I don't get a Sunday paper, so I order coupons online.  That way I can get 5 of each coupon I want, instead of just having 1.  I order from a couple different places. Coupons & Forms & The Coupon Master are the main ones I use.  It is best to find a supplier that lives near you, so you can get your order rapidly - before the ad ends at the end of the week!  If you do a google search, you can probably find many others.

I love using coupons.  I love the thrill of seeing the % I get off of my total bill.  I aspire to be a super Coupon Queen that I see on TV once in awhile where the gals pay under $20.00 for $500.00 worth of stuff that would so rock.  I could dontate more to the shelters this way without feeling the pinch in the budget.

I am going to check out the links, and yes I will use you as a refferal..

I have heard of the coupon game, but never knew anyone that used it.  Thanks for the info.  Sounds worth checking out.

I bought the Coupon Mom system awhile back and use it, but must admit that it's hit or miss at best.  I really want to get better and more consistent with coupons.  When I have been really serious about it, I have saved a lot!

I use coupons, from the Sunday paper and from Couponsmom.com.   I don't usually buy something just because I have a coupon for it but do try new items when I have a coupon. It is hit or miss, sometimes I have quite a few to use with in-store sales and most times only a couple coupons to use.

I have heard of the coupon game but not sure it is anything I really want to try.

I always use coupons. Coupons can save you a lot of money if you know how to use them correctly. I double my coupons, and only get things that I would normally use. Sometimes I might have a coupon for a special treat.

I get coupons free here. There are a lot more out there where you can get your online coupons free. I did a search for free coupons. I have several different sites I refer to. I am going to a few today and print out coupons.

I use coupons too.  I use to subscribe to the couponing websites, but found that mommy bloggers on were posting sales w/coupon matchups...for FREE. So, I made a list of those bloggers to watch and NOW, they are posting their coupon databases! You can simply match the sales with the coupons in the databases..and your done! I'm am definitely going to take advantage of this. Here are two that just recently posted their coupon databases.

I started a while back getting the Sunday paper, clipping coupons, and even had a little binder to put all the coupons in.  I got frustrated though having to keep track of all the different stores that were having the deals. As a mom of 4 I felt like having to go to CSV and Walgreens to get the deals waws a hassle because those weren't places that were often on my list of errands to run.  I gave up...so sad.  I'd really like to save, and would really like to shop the stores that I normally shop. Does anyone else feel this way or I am just not understanding the whole picture?  Does any one know if there is a site for No. California where you can just print up the coupons to just the stuff you want to buy and not have to get a Sunday paper just for coupons?  Maybe I need a crash course in Coupons for Dummies! haha!

Natalie,

Have you checked out www.thegrocerygame.com?  You might like it.  It tells you what is on sale and what coupons you need.  They do a bunch of stores in your area, you can check on their site to see what stores they have in your area.

I use Hot Coupon World, as my coupon source. They have the best coupon database, and a printables coupon section. As well as store forums for most grocery, drug, and mass merchandiser stores. Most of those forums have a 'what's cheap or free this week/month' thread, that is especially great for those just starting out.

I would suggest finding the forums for your stores. It's the best way to start. I did that 3 years ago, and never regretted it. I've saved so much and learned how to get things free or cheap after coupons.

Another good way to start is to write manufacturers of your favorite products.

Billie, Thanks for the link shout out!  I'm so excited about having the coupon database on my site.  It is such a time saver.  I love when my Hubby says he wants OJ and I don't have any.  So a do a quick search for a coupon before I run out.  That way I at least save some $ on an impulse item..hehe.
Natalie - Don't give up on coupons.  I pick 1 grocery store I love and use that consistently.  I occasionally do Walgreens and CVS, but usually only once a month.  I prefer CVS.  Start slow and find a system that works for you.  I'd be glad to help you find a blog that does the coupon match ups for your grocery store.
Take care,
Karen

I used to do the Grocery Game.. until I found Southern Savers!  southernsavers.com is COMPLETELY FREE and if she doesn't do one of your stores, at least you won't have to pay for the lists to Walgreen's, CVS, Target, etc!  It has made such a difference in our budget!  I mean, if you're clipping coupons and trying to save, who wants to pay part of their budget for that information when it is all on one site FOR FREE!  When I found out about Southern Savers, I felt so dumb for having paid for the Grocery Game.  GG was good when I used it, but the SAME thing for free?  Always better.... Here in SC, everyone I know is a Southern Saver fan and we are all so excited that we can't stop talking about how much we save.  Check it out!  It is - and the woman who runs it has said it always will be - FREE!  Geez, I sound like a commercial...  ;-)
