Will you be growing your own food this year?

Started by Tania , author of Larger Family Life - A Large Family Blog 3/2/2010 5:09:03 AM
We've already started  getting ready for spring. This year will be the second time we've tried growing our own food, and it'll be on a larger scale as we now have an allotment to grow on.

Do you grow your own or are you planning to for the first time this year? What will you be growing and how much of a bounty do you normally achieve?  Do you own chickens or goats or anything else that helps provide food for the table?

Do you have any tips or tricks to share? Do you blog about it?

Yes, yes!  And I can't wait!  We live in TN, so we'll be able to start soon.  I plan to plant a few types of tomatoes, corn, giant marconi peppers, squash, zucchini, cucumber, pumpkin, beans and carrots.  Last year was our first year and we had just about a 50% success rate, but have plans to greatly improve this year!

We won't be growing anything this year. I'm a bit lazy and I either over water or under water plants and eventually kill them. We tried tomatoes 2 years ago and it wasn't pretty. D's grandfather came to the rescue with 2 mostly grown tomato plants for us... Sad, but true. This year though we purchased a farm share. I am super excited about this. We get to have fresh produce and support a local farm. Maybe next year we can try the grow it ourselves idea again. I did blog about our decision here. I guess I should update that we did go for it.

Yes, we are doing the grown your own potatoes this year - we did try last year with beans and some other veg but none of the plants survived :-( - think it was slugs as we had loads and I'm just not a natural gardener!

We too will be growing a garden this year. Love the work that we put into it. Awesome for the kids and there is nothing like picking and eating your own veggies. Will start working on the seeds in 15 days. We are lucky to have a gazebo, that we found out last year works very well as a green house!

So do any of you have any tips on keeping slugs and other pests at bay?
