Saying "no" to sugar

Started by Angie , author of Homemaker Chronicles 2/27/2010 10:41:31 PM
I have noticed that the more candy I give my kids, the more they ask for it.  So I have started saying no...no to the candy.  Now what I need are alternatives to the candy, for I hate saying no all the time.  I want to be a fun mom!  What are some good alternatives to refined sugar?

Girl..I am there with you..living in the hood doesnt help..we have a "candy lady" (or man or grandma) on every corner..lol

Anyway,

I have started buying more fruit  and raw veges.and asking kai fun ways she would like to eat it..(well, I convince her that its fun..lol)

i.e. like decorate celery stalks with peanut butter/ add raisins to make it look like there are ants crawling up the stalk...

I make sure when I shop I read labels and look for food that sugar is very low so that she is not tempted to want the candy

here is a book that may have some good recipes in it.. i havent tried it yet, just found out about it..

as a family we are really trying to  change our eating habits..I have wrestled with eating every sense the birth of my daughter and its getting harder and harder but I am trusting the LORD to help me do this..I hope some of this helps

Stumbled upon your blog somehow. Then I read 8 posts in one setting. I'm going to have to add it to my list!

We have a low sugar policy, yet I have a child with severe food issues. She will not eat meats, fruits, veggies, or pastas. So getting creative and finding good replacements for sugars has been tough! I stick with it though. I will find a way to balance her food issues with healthy eating. Good thing she doesn't mind eating the same thing over and over! She lives on grilled cheese, yogurt, applesauce(the no-sugar added kind), and cereal (she loves bran and any boring healthy kind, LOL).

I haven't been that creative. I'm sure anything we have tried is something you have also already tried! My kids love to use fruit juice to make popsicles. We started this habit when my girls were younger and had big problems with red #40, and we've just stuck with the habit. They also love to make fruit smoothies. It is one of the only ways I can sneak fruits to my younger daughter. We just add yogurt, milk, and whatever fruit we like. We just got a Snoopy Snowcone maker. It will give the kids something different to do with all that frozen juice this summer, lol.

We decided to not do the Easter basket thing this year.  I was surprised when my kids didn't even notice! They got a few pieces of candy at church, and they were happy with that. I think once you get the candy out of the house, they will get used to it and not ask for it as much. My girls are old enough to notice how crazy the sugar makes them, so they understand why I hesitate to give it to them. My 2yr old son doesn't understand, but as long as he doesn't see the candy he doesn't think to ask for it.

We are trying to phase out the jelly from the PB&J's. We use honey, but I would love to find another alternative to jelly. I love grape jelly! I hope you get some more responses to this post, because we could use some fresh ideas also!

Ahhh, ladies this is good stuff!  I'll add that we really try to bake our own desserts from scratch.  I realize not everyone has time to do this, but it sure does let you know what all is going into the food.  Plus, it allows me to substitute applesauce for sugar and bleached white flour for whole wheat, etc.  Thanks for your great suggestions!

Anybody else?

For the peanut butter sandwiches try banana!  My kids love it!

We only do candy on the holidays...and only a little bit.  I am afraid if I don't let them have at least a little bit...they may rebel when they are old enough to make there own choices.

Do any of you guys do a treat "day"?  We have treat day every Wed. and they can choose any 3 pieces of candy from a giant bucket.  The problem is when I forget to put the bucket away before the next day...
How do you feel about a treat day?

Haha, I tried to get my daughter to try banana on a PB sandwich the other day and she just said "ewwwww!" I like it that way though :)

Have you tried frozen grapes? I've heard they are a great treat. I also found some good snack ideas on this site.

Some of them use a small amount of sugar, but I figure the recipe could be altered.

Treat days are a good idea! Maybe they won't ask as much if they know they will be allowed on a certain day.
