Gram's Cookie Jar {Share Your OREO Memory to win $200!}

Started by Amy , author of The Finer Things in Life 3/21/2012 3:00:10 PM

I'm sure I could drudge up my own memories, but when I think of OREO cookies, I can't help but think of my husband's sweet Gram.  He has the stories to tell, so for today, I defer.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My grandma's house was in the country.  She was an antique dealer, so she had a bunch of cool stuff, including an old, blue, beat up, cookie jar.
Blue Pot
She had a brown one for candy, and while I certainly did my fair share of getting into the candy jar, the cookie jar was my favorite.  I never thought about how those cookies magically appeared in there, but it was nearly always full.  I could grab the little wooden handle and open up the cookie jar and there may be chocolate chip cookies, fig newtons, or other types of cookies.  The best of course, were OREO.
Gram didn't have any cookie jar rules like I would have as a dad, so I remember grabbing two handfuls of OREO cookies and sliding down the stairs to the basement.  During break time we (brothers and cousins) would munch on some OREO cookies.  When we played outside in the trees or went fishing we would fill our pockets with OREO cookies and play outside for hours.  We could snack on the OREO cookies while hunting each other or fighting the bad guys, refueling at the blue cookie jar.  It didn't matter if it was cold and we had our coats or if it was warm and we were running around in the summer.  There was something we could stuff full of OREO in case we needed a snack.
As I got older we hunted birds and it was not uncommon to have OREO cookies in our hunting jackets.  There were cases of fishing with Gram and eating a few OREO cookies between catching fish.  When I went to college I had a standing rule just like all the other grandkids.  We would stop by the farm, fill up with gas, play a hand of five point pitch, and drink a Pepsi.  I would usually grab a handful of OREO cookies for the rest of my trip to college.
To this day I can't eat an OREO without thinking of my quirky Gram and the blue cookie jar.
My dear husband of 10 yrs and I have started an Oreo & Milk date tradition. We are only allowed to eat one row on a date, so we get 3 dates from one package. We share a large mug of milk, and dunk them to our own specifications. I separate mine and dunk them 3 times each...my man likes to keep his whole and holds it down in the milk a certain length of time until it's soft. Love those times and memories! ~eunice b tigergal01 @gmail .com
When I was a kid, my mom would buy double stuf OREOs and I would tear into them as soon as she got home. I would eat all the icing out of the middle and then eat the cookie. Believer it or not but my favorite part was always the cookie, not the icing. My son does the same thing today, only he loves the icing. I bought 2 packages yesterday and I am sure they will be gone in a few days!
My earliest memory of Oreos was when I was in the first grade. I was on a soccer team and we happened to get black and white uniforms. Of course, we nameed our team The Oreos and created a team banner with everyone designing a felt Oreo with their name. But the best part was that at the end of every game we got to eat Oreos whether or not we had won or lost!
