What was your favorite thing to do at recess?

Started by Julie , author of Leelou Blogs 10/20/2011 2:00:10 AM

I'm really starting to love this day where we get to chat. It's so interesting to hearing what you have to say and getting advice and tips from people all over the world is incredible. Giveaways are a pretty great perk too, right?

Today we're going to do a little reminiscing. What was your favorite thing to do at recess?

My favorite memory is all about jump roping. I discovered double dutch in 4th grade and was SOLD. I was a hip hop double dutching fool and I remember looking forward to it every single day.

Unfortunately recess has changed. Did you know that in the past twenty years, children have lost an average of 8 hours of recess a week. That's a lotof time! Danimals Rally for Recess was designed to create healthy competition, pitting school against school.

Go to Danimals Rally for Recess for a chance to win $20,000 for your Elementary school playground. That's a decent chunk of change that could enormously impact a school! Plus each day Danimals is giving recess-related prizes to keep kids healthy and active. Share your Recess memories below and go to Rally for Recess for more information on how your school can win!

I have partnered with Dannon/Danimals to help promote the “Rally for Recess” campaign. I have been compensated for my time and commitment to the program, which includes writing about the promotion and product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments. Contest Rules.

My favorite memory was the monkey bars. I know most schools do not even have them anymore. But gosh I loved them. I went to Catholic school complete with uniforms, jumpers to be exact. All the girls wore shorts under our jumpers just to hang upside down on the monkey bars. Everyday we'd time ourselves to see just how long we could 'hang like bats' before our faces turned so red the nuns would fuss at us. Those memories are priceless! Thanks for the jaunt down memory lane!

My favorite memory was playing hopscotch! There were about five of us girls that played each and every day. It was so much fun.

I loved the see-saw and that...spinning thing - you ran around and jumped on - tried to get it spinning so fast that people flew off - but they never did... Those were my favorite! I teach now and my kids only get 15 minutes outside for recess :( It seems like we had a lot more time outside when I was in school.

On our play ground we had bars that stood horizontally at different heights. We would climb up onto them then with one leg bent over spin in circles over and over again until we had horrible bruises on the back of our knees. Then we would do a penny drop to get off the bar. Fun times! I loved recess!

I would sit on a wide bar, tie myself to it with a jacket or sweater, and spin around the bar. Just thinking about trying that now makes me nauseous haha

Jump rope! Double dutch for sure, can't even do that anymore. Then handball, NEVER dodge ball. Hated it! Remember Chinese Jacks? Yeah, I did that too.

Oh ! Those years. Loved playing everything from handball to tetherball, to the jungle gym. If only I could still run like that. Happy memories. Thanks for asking.
