Do You Cook Breakfast?

Started by Amy @ Raising Arrows , author of Raising Arrows: Homeschooling with Purpose 1/4/2010 5:57:08 PM
Well, I have come to the place in my life where I am okay with admitting I DO NOT cook a hot breakfast unless I HAVE TO (which is rarely).  This does not bode well w/ my soon to be 12 yr old, but everyone else is good with it.  There's cereal, there's muffins, etc, but if ya want a hot breakfast, call Grandma!

So, who here fixes a hot breakfast every. single. day. (or close to it?)  Any thoughts you'd like to share?

I do not like cooking breakfast. All I can think of is more dishes and clean up to what could be a simple meal with cereal. And I love cereal.  But my kids like variety, so at the beginning of the school year, I divided up the meals and each of the oldest three boys is in charge of a meal. So the 11 year old does breakfast, which includes four hot breakfasts each week. I help him, but he is the worker, and he cleans up. And the kids are all much happier with the food selections, and I don't have to cook three meals a day!

You know, I just told my older kids the other day that if they wanted a hot bkfst, they were welcome to fix it themselves.  Sounds like a plan!

Sure not me! ;) I feed the kids some fruit or leftovers or crackers or yogurt or cereal or.... The only meal I cook is supper. Unless we have company- if we have morning company or an extra kid spent the night and the kids sleep in (from being up much too late goofing off with their company of course), then I have time to make breakfast and will make fried eggs, bacon, and pancakes. Actually I do once in a while make bacon and eggs or eggs and pancakes for just us on the weekends. But I'm not gonna cook when it's just me and the toddlers. When hubby's out of town I don't even cook dinner for me and the kids, we just eat whatever canned soup I can scrounge up.

Yes, (sigh) I usually do cook... but I'm really liking what I'm reading here! ;) I need to show this to my kids!!!! - LOL -

I don't cook 3 meals a day - every day - but I do as much as I can stand to do (can you tell I would love to hire a cook?) I really like the idea of having the kids cook as a regular thing... rather than my frequent announcement... "You're on your own tonight!" In fact, I think I might just take breakfast right off my plate and hand it to the kids. One down, and only two to go! Thanks, ladies! :)

Ack, Corine...you are going to HATE tomorrow's post! {however, I do agree, at some point, my kiddos will take over I am sure}

We usually cook on the weekends.  And by 'we' I mean my husband.  :P

He loves to do it, we love to eat it and it's a wonderful way to start a Saturday and Sunday.  Of course, this then leads into some great debates and conversations, usually centered around the bible.

I work during the school year, so making a hot breakfast isn't a priority.  Like you, there is cereal, English muffins, oatmeal and Cream of Wheat.

And no one is starving.  :D

Well, honestly I don't enjoy cooking breakfast! My husband does though. During the weekdays I alweays get up early and help him get off to work, by making his coffee and packing him a hot lunch etc. By then the children are awake to kiss Daddy good-bye. After he heads out I have trained my oldest 2 children to make breakfast for the whole family and and then all of the kids help clean up. My husband started a tradition years ago that he gets up and makes a special big breakfast on Saturday mornings for everyone. The kids love helping him with that, and choosing the menues. So that pretty much leaves only Sunday for me to take care of :-)

No, not regularly...fruit and rolled oats is usually it for my 3 kids - I always start them with fruit (gets the digestive enzymes going!). Then they usually get rolled oats or toast or both. Usually at the breakfast bar, while Mummy is washing up or feeding our toddler or getting my own breakfast. Its a busy time when hubby is getting ready for work, usually around 7am, but we're still together, if not haphazardly!  Occasionally on the weekend my husband will have a cooked breakfast..he usually cooks it himself or I do sometimes to bless him...but that's about it.

I don't feel guilty for it and I know they are a lot healthier with fruit and rolled oats.

You know, I think the more important component in many ways is that you are all together!  That's what was lacking for me.
