School in the Summer?

Started by City of Moms , author of City of Moms 6/30/2011 12:36:05 AM

Hi Amy,  Thanks for the follow.  Had a question.  Was wondering how many homeschooling moms do some form of homeschooling through out the summer.  We usually take a total month off and then start covering some of the things that we worked on at the end of the school year.  When most schools start in the fall, it seems like they are reviewing things from the previous year for the first 9 weeks.  I found that starting on August first with review really helped get us ready for the fall, plus we had more days to play with at Christmas time.  We only review for about an hour each day in August, so it isn't a full school day.  Your thoughts?

Welcome!

A lot of moms I know school through the summer or only take a month off like you do.  Since we school straight through (taking off here and there as needed), I've found we don't need to review at all.

I remember quite well the first 6 weeks or more of my public schooling was repeat of the year before.  I'm glad to not have to do that!

That's really smart Amy, we used to do that, but the last couple of years I've really needed a break, lol.  Good for you!!  You are my hero :)

We school year round also.  Our general rule is if Dad works we school.  I do take a week or two off for Christmas and Easter and will take a day or week off to get caught up on projects or if I need rest.  We are able to take time off if my parents visit or to go on vacation.  It works well.  Also, I have 8 children, 6 of whom we homeschool and they need a schedule and to keep busy or I have lots of trouble!
