How do you teach kids good manners?

Started by Valerie , author of Mama Needs Maintenance 3/26/2011 1:44:44 AM

I find myself saying, "Kids don't respect adults these days like we did" all the time, but also acknowledge that I don't want to raise my kids the same authoritative way I was raised... We put a lot of work into emotion coaching in our house, yet it still feels frustrating when our little people can't seem to grasp the most basic of manners (thank you, don't interrupt, etc...).  I hate feeling like a nag or disapproving, but think it is definitely my role to teach these behaviors.

What tips/books do you have on how to approach this topic?

I love this simple book, which I recently reviewed:

Thanks!!

I got the book 365 Manners, and plan on focusing on a different on each week, depending on age.  Mostly, it's just practice, practice, practice!  Sometimes I feel like a broken record!  We just starting teaching our 2-year old to say "No thank you" instead of "Yuck!" when she doesn't want to eat something.  It's been about 2 weeks and now she says it on her own.
