Quiet Time

Started by Joan , author of The Beauty in His Grip 4/13/2010 4:03:47 PM

Hi everyone!  I thought it might be nice to share some of our favorite "methods" for having a quiet time with the Lord.  As for me, I love to get up pretty early in the morning, pour a cup of coffee and spend time in His word and pray.  I started doing this when my kids were little and still at home.  What began as being "the only time available", turned into my favorite time of day!  When weather permits, I even go out on my patio, sometimes with a quilt wrapped around my shoulders, to spend my time with Him.  It is so peaceful at that time of day when the birds are only just waking up.  An added bonus is that I feel fully prepared to face the world when I start it that way with Him.

What are some ways you all enjoy your quiet time?

Hi Joan,
I too like the early morning hours to be in His Word. That way my day gets started on the 'right foot'. If I don't have the quiet time in the morning, my day normally does not go as well as when I do have the time with Him.
Thank you for starting this marvelous discussion.

Last night at a Bible study that I'm attending we also discussed the early morning quiet time.  An "interesting" thing was discovered.  We all agreed that when we spend our first hour with the Lord, we still seem to get the things done that we need to get done during the day.  It is like "scheduling" that one hour in the morning actually increases our available time.  The Living Bible translation (actually a paraphrase) says:  "Reverence for God adds hours to each day." Proverbs 10:27.  I've found that to be so true!

Thank you for sharing the Bible passage here. I really need to spend more time in Proverbs...

I admit I need to get a lot more discipline going in terms of getting some quiet time. Usually, though, the best time for me is early in the morning when the rest of the household isn't awake yet. My biggest distraction is the computer; I tend to boot up before I brush my teeth and dive in to email, etc.

Another great way to get quiet time for me is to go to the beach. I love to walk along the edge of the water (especially when it's early and the crowds haven't yet arrived). It helps to put my own little issues into perspective.

But since I don't get to the beach all that often, we're back at paragraph # 1... I need to get some more discipline.

<Sigh>

I have to admit it was not until I made the "commitment" to get up and have a quiet time that I was actually able to follow through.  I was tired in the morning and Satan would give me every reason to stay in bed.

But now if I miss it I feel like I did not start my day off right.  I have to say I do the same thing, I go to my patio with my coffee and work/read whatever the Lord has led me to.  Sometimes it is just the bible, sometimes it is a bible study I am working through.  It varies depending on the season of my life.

There are times I was struggling and I would get up and just sit there and say "I'm here Lord, this is all I can do today."  Even then he blessed my effort (not that, that should be all the time).

Enjoyed reading your comments.

I love getting up in the morning and heading outside for a run.  I love to pray and talk with God during that time.  I feel like I'm getting myself equipped for the day.
I've also found my time at the park (writing at a bench), is a good time for me to connect.
At night I try to go to bed before I feel dead tired, so that I can rewind through my day with Him, and see His grace throughout it.

I look forward to the early mornings my self however when I was in Bible College and my oldest daughter and middle son where younger late nights when the house was quite was when I was able to focus and study the most.

I must say that now the way my schedule is and the years have crept up I must do it early because I will be asleep by 1:00 a.m.  I love the smell of coffee while searching the scriptures, they just seem to go hand in hand!

"Seek him early while he maybe found."

I want so badly to have my quiet time in the morning again... my husband gets up at 4am and I make him coffee and usually go back to bed until the older girls get up for school at 6...then I have a toddler and 5 yr old that usually sleep until at least 9....that's the only time I really get some sleep because I don't get to bed until midnight or later usually.  I need to be more strict to get the kids in bed on time at night so that I can have time w the hubby for a  few hrs before he goes to bed and I can wind down earlier.  Anyone have any other good ways to get better at this??  I am SO NOT a morning person at ALL, and caffeine does NOT wake me up.  I know anyone can BECOME a morning person, I guess I just have to be more disciplined.  God always blesses my day and my time with Him when I make the effort- that should be enough to get me to do it more often!

I've really noticed that evenings/late at night are more adequate for me, lol. It's really about finding that niche that works best so instead of finding ourselves "missing the opportunities"...grasping for it instead.

During vacations, mornings are so so much easier, but I've found realistically, it works to find that time when we can really be "quiet" and not try to fight against something that isn't in our natural pattern during the day.

Unlike the mornings, during the evening hours, I usually make a hot cup of tea and either scones or cookies and that is my, okay, time to breathe, sit down and focus all on Him.

However, I do make an effort to start the day, each day, that the first thing I do, waking up, is to get out of bed, on my knees and start the day with prayer before everything else.

With that...its sometimes, something as simple as just prayer and it doesn't have to be an elaborate daily ritual of doing something......but remembering start the day with Him first before everything else.
