The Million Moms Challenge is almost over. I am a huge supporter of this cause. This month we are talking about Childrens Health.

My first child was born with a complication. Of course, since I was a first-time mom I had no idea that he was unusual. And the fact that I was discharge within 24 hours after his birth didn't help matters. He wasn't in the hospital long enough for the doctors of nurses to see that there was anything wrong.

We got home and within hours he was throwing up blackish matter. I held him upside down as he choked. After that he threw up almost everything that he ate. He ate ALL the time, and since he was gaining weight the doctors put my questions and concerns off.

Once he had his first birthday and was still throwing up 6-7 times a day my doctor finally had me take him in for tests. They tied him to a board and had him drink some liquid so they could look at his digestive tract.

After those test they put him on medicine which made him have constant diarrhea. It was so hard to see my little baby in pain. But I didn't want to make a fuss with the doctors.

Once my son turned three he was about to start pre-school and still was throwing up all of his food. I knew this couldn't go on. I finally switched doctors. the new doctor told me right away that this was not normal and should not be treated with medicine.

The new doctor sent us to our local children's hospital where they did some tests and discovered that my little guy had ulcers all the way down his esophagus. And without treatment, the scar tissue would close his airway. Within two days we were scheduled for surgery.

It was hard seeing him go through major surgery, but it was the best thing that ever happened. Since then he has been able to live a normal life.

What did I learn from this experience?? I learned that as a parent, we know our children best. We know when things are not right. It's ok to challenge what doctors tell us and keep pushing until we find the right answer. We are our children's most important advocate. That is our role. And even though standing up to people and making waves is the hardest thing in the world for me, it is something that I have learned I have to do and I will do for the well-being of my children.

	That's why I am so passionate about the Million Mom Challenge. We can help make the world a better place! {{{Happy Monday}}}

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!

We had so much fun with our family.

I came home to a schizophrenic house -- half of it is Christmas, half is Thanksgiving. I am excited to get all of my Christmas things out and make it all festive this week. In the meantime, I have a family Holiday Treat to share with you!!

If you know me, you will know that I am not a big baker. But I do like to make cute holiday treats. This is a FUN recipe your kids can help with. It's easy, it's fast and it's festive!

	Peppermint Whoopie Pies

Plus, you use a cake mix -- so it's super fast!! Your kids will love making these holiday treats with you. And, I know I have mentioned that I am a moderator at the International delight's forum. It's a great place to connect and share with other people. I don't drink coffee myself, but I used some of the International Delights Peppermint Mocha in this recipe and it is DELIGHTFUL.

(I've included more pictures and details on my blog ... check out the full details in today's post)

	Mix

 1 boxed cake mix.

 3 eggs

 1/2 cup water

 1/2 cup oil

1/3 cup Mocha Peppermint International Delight Creamer

	Filling

1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened

 1 1/3 cups marshmallow fluff

 3/4 cup powdered sugar

 2 oz cream cheese, softened

 1 tsp. vanilla

 1/4 tsp, salt

 1/2 tsp. peppermint oil

	Directions:

Mix all ingredients together. Use a spoon a put 2 inch balls on a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper. Be sure to use parchment paper.

Look at the difference between cookies bakes with parchment paper and those on a plain cookie sheet:

Bake at 400-degrees for 8-10 minutes until the center of the cookie can be pricked with a toothpick and come out clean. Let cool on a wire rack.

Make the Filling. Fill the center of the cookies with the filling and then roll them in the crushed peppermints or sprinkles.

Now's the fun stuff!! Crush up the peppermints in your food processor. If you don't have one, put them in a zip lock and pound them with a glass or rolling pin. Ella and Hannah love doing this!

I also made a printable you can use and leave out on Christmas Eve!! Check out my blog post for the printable and full details!

And guess what?? You can win a $200 Walmart gift card!!

Tell International Delight what your favorite holiday treat is for a chance to win a $200 Walmart gift card.

Capture the flavors of the holidays in every cup of coffee with International Delight Creamers. Available in a variety of flavors, such as, Pumpkin Pie Spice, Vanilla Spiced Rum and White Chocolate Raspberry.

Last month I wrote about my youngest daughter's premature birth, this month for the Million Moms Challenge, I am going back in time 15 years ago to the over-due birth of my oldest daughter.

My second pregnancy was going perfectly as planned and I was thrilled when I discovered I was having a girl. I had made a birth plan, my mother was coming out two days before I was to be induced to help with the new baby and to help care for our almost two-year-old son. Plus my husband had asked for time off from work.

I went into my last doctor's appointment confident that everything was turning out exactly as I had envisioned. My mom was scheduled to fly out the next day and I would have a baby within the week. Then things started to go off the grid. My doctor informed me that he didn't think my dates were right and he wondered if the baby was ready to be born. I had a strep test and it came back positive for Strep B which meant I needed to have antibiotics before the baby came. And I also needed an amniocentesis to find out if my baby's lungs were developed. What???

I was still confident that this baby was coming soon. My mom arrived and then I got the call with the results of the amniocentesis -- the baby's lungs weren't ready. It might be a couple of weeks before I could have the baby. I was measuring right but they weren't sure on my due date because of the amnio results.

So the waiting began. My mom played with my son. My son had his birthday and my due date came and went. Finally the day before my mom was going to fly back home, the doctor called and scheduled me to be induced. Hallelujah!!

The actual labor and delivery of my daughter went pretty quickly. She was a big baby, so delivering her was a challenge and there were some tense moments and a pretty bigepisiotomy because of her large head (she's still strong-willed by the way LOL).

	{my oldest and youngest daughters}

But when I finally looked into her sweet face, I knew that love that I had also felt with my son and my other two children as well. It's as if a piece of your heart is outside of your body. Being a mother has changed my life for the better. I can't imagine my life any other way.
Childbirth is such an incredible moment, and I’d love to know what went through your mind when you held your baby for the first time? I love being a mom. Growing up, I wasn't gaga over babies like many of my friends. So I wondered if that would change if I decided to have children. But from the moment I held my son for the first time I felt that unconditional, overwhelming love that everyone talks about.

I had a hard time getting pregnant with my last child. We tried for a year or so and I wondered if it was really meant to be. Then when we found out I was pregnant I was overjoyed. Everything was going along pretty well until my dad got in a car accident. I flew to California to be with him and after a few days in the hospital he was discharged and we thought everything was fine. But over the summer he started losing weight and we worried.

At Thanksgiving, he went in for exploratory surgery. I flew out for Thanksgiving thinking they were going to find out what was wrong with my dad and fix it. So we were completely unprepared for the news that he had inoperable Pancreatic Cancer. This was utterly devastating. He had just turned 60.

I flew home from spending Thanksgiving with my mom and dad in the hospital and I was feeling terrible. I was 34 weeks pregnant and my body started swelling up. I went into my regular appointment and my blood pressure was through the roof. They had my lay on my side and checked it again and it was still so high. I had pre-eclampsia.

So I was put on bedrest. After a week, my blood pressure wasn't going down, but was going up so they checked me in to the hospital to be induced. After the labor was progressing, I was put on medicine to bring my blood pressure down and it worked so well that it went down too well and I passed out. All of the alarms were going off at the hospital. Doctors and nurses were rushing around. I think my husband just about had a heart attack.

They finally stabilized me. Ella was born 2 minutes before midnight on December 6th. She weighed in at 4 pounds. And the amazing thing was that she could breath on her own.

Later after I was home recuperating, I read an obituary in the paper of a woman about my age who had a stroke while in labor with the same condition. It really made me grateful to modern science and a doctor who stayed with me the entire time to monitor me and make sure everything went ok.

My dad was able to meet Ella and spend some time with her which was a blessing too.

Becoming pregnant changed my life, and I’d love to hear more about your best or most difficult pregnancy moments. By replying, you will be entered to win an exclusive Million Moms Challenge Gift Pack, which includes an all expenses paid trip to a conference on mothers hosted by the UN Foundation in DC (Jan/Feb 2012), an iPad2, a custom-made Million Moms Challenge pendant and $50 donation in your name to Global Giving. Ok I have done tons of painting in my day, furniture included. However I have a project I want too do. I have an 8 foot tall China Cabinet, 8 Foot tall Curio Cabinet and 8 foot table, and a antique wash stand. All of these were handed down from my parents. The China Cabinet, 8 foot table and Curio were bought in Germany, the wash stand is from my grandmothers child hood.

Anyway, they are stained a cherry color and it I have wanted to paint them white forever, my parents and my ex were both military so they have been moved well over 20 times ending up with various scratches or chips. I really want them to have a worn look, like a chocolate brown undercoat with white on top, sanded to look shabby chic.

This is also important furniture and I tried to ask the guy at home depot the best way to do it and he gave me a run around crappy answer and actually provided me with nada.

All the pieces have a clear coat and then stain. How do I remove all the clear coat poly? Can someone tell me the best way to do the shabby look?

I had planned on using the primer/paint combo since I used it on my walls and loved it. Then sanding/rouging up the top white coat? Is this correct? Then..how many coats of poly need to go on? Thanks much all!

I included some photos if it helps? The table is not shown but is the same wood finish as the curio and china cabinet.

Alrighty ladies I have kind of a crazy ? I am writing a new blog called Loving My Heart and Home. It's about how to turn your house into a home. I am planning on having 2 linky parties a week once the blog designer gets done with my design. I'm not at all worried about the 1st blog party but the 2nd one has me a little worried and I don't want to offend anyone. I'm planning on calling it Who Needs A Man Wednesday. It's where women can link up and show how they created projects or fixed household things, inside and out, without the help of a man. Basically it's to help women learn how to do household things without being reliant on a man to complete a project. First of all am I crazy? Would you read it? Would you contribute? I am open to suggestions!

Please come by and check it out!

 Thanks,

I bought this chaise lounge from a friend a few years ago. I love the piece of furniture with all my heart but I hate the colors (for me). I am a somewhat crafty person so I feel that I can recover it or do something to change the colors and I cannot afford to have it reupholstered professionally. So I come to you and ask for your input. Can anyone give me ideas or tips for changing it?

All the pillows and the seat cushion are removable. There is also a cherry color wood trim, which I'm fine with leaving or could paint.

Personally I think it is alright if your doctor has recommended medication for your child. But ideally it is up to the parents. So what is your opinion on medicating children with ADHD? Do you have a child with ADHD? Is he/she on medication for it? Or do you prefer natural herbal remedies to treat your child?

Have you ever been copied?

Has anyone ever copied an idea of yours and not given you credit? I know a lot of us post tutorials on our blogs and show others how make an item we share but how do you handle someone doing your tutorial, then posting it in an online shop ( not selling it but displayin their item for sale on it, if that makes sense )AS WELL as posting the exact same tutorial on their blog with no credit to you whatsoever?

I think it's one of those things you have to just let go and move on but it's not easy when you work so hard on something only to not get credit for it.

	What's your thoughts on this?

	From:

	Crayon Monogram

Crayons are only 25 cents at Wal_mart right now!

I found this great idea on several blogs and thought I'd give it a try! I had a hard time finding a step by step tutorial so I just jumped in. I took some shots along the way, so maybe it'll help someone else make the same thing.

First you'll need a piece of cardstock, a template for your letter of choice, 2-3 boxes of crayons (depending on your letter and the size), a shadow box, hot glue gun, adhesive for the cardstock, a cutting board and a knife. Oh, have an old towel on hand, too.

Before you start, go ahead and stick your crayons in the freezer. I know this sounds crazy but my friend Virginia suggested this and it helped so so much!!

Print your letter out in your favorite font. Keep in mind the size of your shadow box and make sure your letter will fit inside. A simple block/basic font is the easiest. Cut your letter out and trace it lightly on your cardstock. I even went back and erased lots of my tracing so nothing would show up in my final project.

I took my template and just eyeballed the size of the crayon pieces I would need. Cut your crayons to your desired lengths and then hot glue in place.

To cut your crayons, you'll want to take them out of the freezer and dump them on your workspace - I worked next to my kitchen sink, with a smaller cutting board on top of an old dishtowel. Then I let my tap water get super hot and just left it running while I cut the crayons.

Run your knife under the hot water for a few moments and dry off quickly and cut your crayon. I only had to saw back and forth a little bit before the crayon just popped in half. I got a super clean cut this way. Before I tried the hot knife/cold crayon approach, I just cut each crayon with a regular knife (from an old set of kitchen knives), on the cutting board. You can see here the difference between the two types of cutting:

 regular cutting:

 hot/cold method:

So, here's the difference between the two ways - the regular old saw it with a knife way left me with rough edges and a mess on my cutting board. This meant there were bits and flakes on the crayon itself on the cutting board. That meant the little bits and pieces stuck to my crayon and just made a mess.

The hot/cold method left behind almost no little bits and pieces - so those crayons just looked a ton better!! I know you can't tell much in my photos above - but believe me, the hot knife and frozen crayons worked so so much better!

Okay - back to details. Once you have all your crayons glued down, go ahead and trim your cardstock to match the backing to the shadow box. I applied adhesive to the edges and through the middle of the backing and placed my finished cardstock on top. I wanted to write the teachers name but you could print it if you wanted on your car

Cupcake Challenge

After having three children, I need to shed about 75 pounds. Where I live gets into the triple digits and there are days where it’s just not an option to take our baby out in this heat. Right now, I’m one of 20 finalists to win a Smooth Fitness treadmill. This contest ends tonight (Sunday). It’s super easy to vote for me. It only takes these three easy clicks:

 Visit this blog post: http://www.mamavation.com/2010/07/top-20-smooth-fitness-nominees-go-vote.html

Locate & check the box next to my name, @lovelyritaann, on the voting poll

(*Please Note: You can vote from any & every device that has internet access – computers, laptops, phones, iPods, iPads, Nintendo DSi’s, etc.*)

It’s absolutely that simple. I’m a little behind; however, with amazing friends like you behind me, I could have a chance at winning this awesome prize that would change my life! It would be appreciated if you voted for me & shared this information in any way you can. My apologies on the short notice. I’m also hosting a giveaway for a $50 gift card on my blog for my voters, if I am to win. My giveaway was pre-approved by the contest creator before I posted it. Feel free to enter yourself & share this information! You can find my giveaway by visiting my blog post here:http://lovelyritaann.com/2010/07/26/vote-for-me-win-a-50-gift-card/
