10 Tips for Hosting the Perfect Game Day Party

Started by angie , author of sevenclowncircus.com 2/13/2012 2:00:10 AM

Hosting a Game Day party can be super simple, whether you have 10 friends in attendance or 50. {I wouldn't know about any larger a crowd, I've never tried it!}  Here are my tips for throwing a Game Day Party that is guaranteed to leave you feeling frazzle-free.  {I promise}

10 Tips for Hosting the Perfect Game Day Party

1.  Of course, my #1 tip is to prepare, prepare, prepare.  Organization is the key.  {smiling}

  • Have everything planned  out and prepared before hand.  The last thing you want to be doing when your guests have already arrived is to be setting out plates and napkins, trying to remember all the things you have on the menu, what items need your attention, and what items need to be put where.  You do not want to start your party stressed, right?

2.  Make sure the "game viewing area" is clean with lots of great/accessible seating.  If you have items in the room you don't want touched and/or possibly broken, remove them!  I usually rent chairs if I don't have enough seating for everyone that was invited.  It's a super easy and cheap way to make sure everyone is comfortable!  {The company I use only charges me $.50 a chair!}

  • Don't forget about the latrines.  Make sure they are clean, that there are plenty of clean hand towels and that they smell good!

3.  Make sure the TV is working and ready to go.  No one wants to arrive to a party and find technical difficulties.

4.  Get your inspiration on!  So many sites have really fun and easy party ideas posted if you really want to get snazzy like Pinterest, Tip Junkie and The Creative Party Place.

5.  Have the beverages accessible and cold.  The hostess of an event like this shouldn't have to worry about making sure everyone has a drink.  Let them help themselves!

6.  And, let's not forget about the best part!  The FOOD!

  • Serve buffet style!
  • Keep it warm:  crock pots are a great way to keep food warm, and an excellent way to utilize time when you are getting ready for the big day.  If there are a few things you can make early on in the crockpot, it's one less thing to do at crunch time.
  • FINGER FOODS!  Everyone loves finger foods!  They are easy to serve, eat and enjoy!  Tyson Any'tizers, anyone?
7.  Make sure the disposal receptacles are handy.  I always mean to have one for trash and one for recyclables at the ready.  This is my number one party fail, though!

8.  Go with disposable paper goods and utensils.  Make you sure you have plenty on hand, too!   Everyone likes to go back for seconds, and no one likes to use their original dirty plate!

9.  Tire your kids out before hand.
It's a whole lot easier being hostess when all of your attention can be shared with your guests.  If your kids are tired (or you have a babysitter), you'll have more time to spread your love around.  :)

10.  Enjoy!  No party is a good party if the host/hostess can't  enjoy themselves, too!

It's always important to actually invite people to your party....and make sure you are prepared for when they show up. :)

My best party tip is to sit down and enjoy the spread you've out together with your friends. No one can relax when you're running around like crazy. Grab an appetizer, kick back and enjoy your company!

If kids are invited (Im assuming they would be if its a family/friends gathering)- I would suggest you hire a professional or well-trusted babysitter so that you (the host) can give your undivided attention to the guests; and the guests can enjoy an uninterrupted event. Set up games, coloring, movies (large selection), and anything else to entertain all ages in a separate room or house (if the neighbors are invited, im sure they would love to volunteer their home in exchange for "kid-free adult time" next door. Create a separate "game party" for the kids with food and fews decorations, etc. - its sure to give you a ton of relief and way less stress! Hope this helps!

I think keeping everything warm is very important. I think a great party spread can be completely ruined when its cold! I also think having stuff prepared for the kids to do (games, video games, etc) can free up the adults to visit!

I have a green-ish tip. We try not to use a bunch of paper plates for parties when possible. Instead we buy plastic and glass plates from the dollar store or thrift store. We get them super cheap (sometimes 25 cents) and it's fun to sort of mix and match and add color to the party!

My best party tip is to prep as much as you can ahead of time that way you're not stuck in the kitchen!! Enjoy your company {and the game}.

I have to admit that I get overly excited when I see pictures of your boys...especially ones as darling as these. Just the other day, I saw them in a TV commercial and starting yelling at the TV. My children were so confused. ;) My biggest party tip: Make sure you've got people on your guest list who will bring the fun. A snore crowd never makes for a good party. Translation: Include me! Haha.

My biggest party tips are basically what you have above. Prep in advance, have lots of finger foods and use items that can stay warm throughout in chafing dishes or crockpots. :-) Oh, and lots of junky, bad for you dips and appetizers are usually a big hit at these types of party - so remove the salads from the list.

Easy foods that you aren't in the kitchen preparing the whole time. I like to cut up the veggies the day before and make any dips at that time too.
