Organizing Your Kid's Sports/Activity STUFF

Started by Tanna , author of Complete Organizing Solutions 4/15/2010 2:02:06 PM

This spring I officially became a sideline sitting, crazy cheer leading, sport STUFF toting, soccer mom! Today on the Mabelhood I shared how I keep my son's soccer stuff organized.

How many activities are your children in during the year and what type of things do you have to keep track of? Is there a sport or activity you dread because of all of the STUFF involved that needs organizing?

Let's discuss your favorite tips for keeping your kid's sport/activity stuff organized!

Our little guy is 3 and not yet in any organized sports- although this summer returns swim lessons.  Thinking about soccer or hockey for the fall.  (I love these labels- and both of these sports require equipment that I can put his name all over!)

Who doesn't love Mabel's Labels?!  My son is currently in a couple of church programs, spends time at the YMCA Kid Zone, plus a co-op group for preschool.  This summer brings swim lessons.  The Fall will bring all new activities!
I also have friends with multiple kiddos in church nurseries and preschools.  I have enough problems keeping up with the stuff of one child!  I can't even fathom more in the pile!  Tanna, you are a mom of three and you ROCK at it!

My boys, ages 7 & 9 are into skiing, skating, soccer, and baseball.  The older one is also in library club and a young authors group.  To be honest, I find keeping the sport "stuff " organized to be the easiest part. We have lost a few items though and I can see how Mabel's Labels would be quite helpful.  What's difficult for me is the schedules, locations and transportation logistics!  At least ski season is over!

I'm so looking forward to summer...just so they stop bringing home all that paper to sort through!  What to keep? What to sign and return?  Is this really just a paper airplane, or do I need to read it?
How can I be a minimalist if my family won't let me?

Thanks Julie! Yes some days it feels like we are all over the place but as you know it helps so much to have it all organized!

Lucia, I know the papers are crazy. Here is how I deal with them. My oldest is 9 as well but he is not into sports at all. He loves to read. I love the idea of a young authors group. I will have to see if there is something like that around here. He has mentioned several times that he wants to write a book. I can see it now, a mixture of history meets diary of a wimpy kid.

Tanna,

Love the command central!   I can really see that working.  We fall victim to the out of sight, out of mind issue.

You'd think I would have learned from my mom who was the "manager" for our family of eleven children.  Most of our kitchen furniture and cookware was from a restaurant supply store!  My mom's seat at the table was dubbed "command central"!

Since I have to work at not being so scattered, I want to give my kids the skills to get and stay organized.  My youngest hates to see anything donated, tossed, sold or otherwise disgarded...."Mom, I might need it for a memory".  I have to do it on the sly.  We have to start taking pictures of things. (to torture him..."we don't have that anymore...mom probably threw it away".

I keep activity items organized by a good bag as well. If the shoes and the glove are in the bag, it usually doesn't get lost.

Basketball, basketball, and basketball!  We have five kiddos and all but the youngest are into bball nearly year round.

Then there is ballet for the youngest and music lessons for others.

Each of the kids has a basketball bag and that is where all things bball stay...shoes, uniforms, ball, bandaids and for the teen girls...hairspray, headbands, deoderant, lotion,  etc.(they each have separate products that remain in their bags).  Everyone has a designated spot in their own closet for their bag and it olny comes out the night before game/practice days...which is frequent.  The youngest has a ballet bag where we keep everything she will need for the next lesson.

Mabels labels would help SO much!  Especially for our oldest, who is now playing basketball in college, where mom is no longer around to make sure everything gets labeled!

My daugher is 8 and into fall soccer, dance classes and has recently begun playing lacrosse. Home organization is easy with a fabric storage cube for each activity. Mabels labels would be great for ensuring that all the miscellaneous pieces of equipment find their way home.

My son is 3.5 and not yet into sports, but he does attend daycare which requires changes of clothing. the daily sippy cup and rain/snow apparel. These items all require labels for keeping track of them!

I have been a soccer mom with fir my son who is turning 10 next month since he was 6.  I am team mom, cheerleader, snack tracker, driver and most of hugger.  He just got picked for spring select so my soccer season will continue until mid June; at which time we switch to summer softball for the girls.   I also have 3 daughters.   All three involved in something from VP of student council and softball to band.  I am doing something 6 of 7 days a week between working full time and all the kids activities.
