Dave Ramsey ~ Love him, Like him, Leave him?

Started by The Happy Housewife , author of The Happy Housewife 1/5/2010 3:00:23 PM
I love Dave! I know many of his principals are basic, but they work! We followed his plan a few years ago and have been debt free ever since.

I plan on rereading a few of his books this year, just to stay inspired.

What about you? Love him, like him or leave him?

We have never read Dave, but I've picked up through the grapevine that we pretty much have always followed his principles.

Through our almost 25 yr. marriage, we have never had credit card debt. We drive vehicles that are paid for, and we make extra payments on our mortgage (our only debt) which will allow us to have it paid off in 6-7 years.

We do carry credit cards, which I think is a Dave "no-no", but we never charge any amount we don't have in the bank.

I love Dave Ramsey & what he teaches! I've been a DR fan for about 2 years now. I love his books and radio show/podcast! I listen to him on the radio at least once a week while I'm doing my ironing...makes the ironing much more pleasant & I learn! We're currently on baby step 6 but getting ready to fall back to 5 since we have a baby on the way!

Following Dave's principles got us out of debt a few years ago. I really like him. We have never tried to envelope method, but we probably should. I'm sure it would save us money and we could put more away for retirement or a rainy day.

We used the envelope system for a few years. We got away from it towards the end of last year, but we are definitely going back. I save so much money using cash!

I've never read his books but we've pretty much followed his principles anyway without knowing it!

LOVE him! I wish I had learned those principals younger, we would have avoided a lot of struggle early on.  I plan to teach the teen curriculum at my son's homeschool group next year.  I'm really excited about it, if they apply the principals their chances of financial success increase greatly!

Oh, love DR! I picked up his book (The Total Money Makeoever) a few years ago at the library and really didn't think he was going to tell me much I didn't already know. (At that point, we were squeaking by on my husband's meager salary and I thought I was the QUEEN of frugality!) I was completely surprised! I love the concept of Baby Steps - having a specific plan makes a HUGE difference. I love all the stories he includes in the book about real people - so inspiring. And I really appreciate his straightforward and practical Biblical application.

I was SHOCKED that we paid off $25,000 worth of student loans in less than 2 years and we remain debt free except for our house today. Last year we sort of relaxed a bit, but over Christmas, I had the swine flu and picked up his book once more. We're fired up again & ready to finish the Baby Steps!

I love his radio show too! You can listen to the archives here. (Fridays are especially cool - I totally cry when I hear people scream "I'M DEBT FREEEEEEE!!!" Cheesy, I know, but so inspiring.)

I have always considered myself financially savvy and enjoy reading personal finance magazines and books.  I kept hearing about Dave Ramsey so I checked out the book to find out what all the fuss was about.  Overall, I think his approach is good.  I have never been in debt but if so many people have been helped by him then I think it's great.

My husband and I are both natural savers, so have followed many DR ideas without intending, too. I appreciate a lot of what he teaches, but I think we place a much greater emphasis on giving than I felt he did. I know he touches on it, encourages it, etc., but I just want him (or someone) to go a step further.

We like to live like no one else now, so we can give like no one else can, not to just save for the future, and live like no one else later. In finances I definitely work to keep an eternal perspective.

So, I guess we like him, and appreciate the help he has given to so many families in really tough situations.
