Do you keep your childrens clothes ??

Started by Rachelle , author of Mamas Little Bears 8/18/2009 3:29:05 PM
I would love to know what you all do with your childerns clothes? Do you save them for the younger ones or just toss them, and shop at a Goodwill when they need items ?

Here is my problem.. I have ten children ( that's not the problem ;-) ) I keep all the clothes so we can pass them down. I do toss the stained ones out, old looking and ripped ones. The problem is I have about 35 totes of clothes now!!

We are moving soon out of state and I really don't want to move them all.
Do you only keep a few things and toss the rest.
Help me out and share how you store them and how much you keep.

Thanks for any ideas or tips you my have!
Blessings-
Rachelle

Rachelle-
I have the same problem as you, although we only have 7 kids. My youngest boy is 7 so I have stopped saving his clothes. If we did have another boy, the clothes would have been stored so long they probably would not be in very good condition.
With my girls 5, 3, and 4 months, I have saved everything (in good condition). But as Cora is growing out of things I am only saving the really great stuff and they rest I give away.
I was actually thinking about getting rid of my maternity clothes too. I have had them for a while and to be honest I am getting tired of them! I know if I needed maternity clothes again I could get decent stuff at the thrift store or on eBay.
As for the kids clothes, with yard sales, thrift stores and hand me downs from other families I am starting to only save stuff that is really special.
I still have about 15 totes, but that includes winter coats and boots... so it doesn't seem too bad, especially since now I have a basement to store it in!

So far I've saved just about all the good outfits from my daughter (20 months old). If we don't have another girl in the next year or so I will probably start getting rid of a lot of those. The number of totes in my attic is getting overwhelming and we are moving soon.

I'm interested to see how everyone else handles this though.

We have 7 children and just made a major move into a smaller home.  Up until then, I had been saving EVERYTHING.  I knew I was going to have to cull some things and I was stressing about it until a friend said, "Let those clothes be a blessing to some other family and trust God to supply all your needs."

That was just what I needed.  I got rid of SO MANY clothes!

The best part? So far, no one has had to go naked.  God really has supplied all our needs!

I only keep the clothes in the best condition and that I honestly want the next child to wear.  I focus on keeping higher price items such as winter jackets and shoes if they are still in good condition.  Most of the play clothes and "trendy" clothes I donate or toss.

I love what Connie said!  We have always chosen to give away most of our kiddos clothes when they were done with them.  There has always been someone that we knew who could use them.  When we were having our third baby our finances took a turn for the worse and I was worried about how I was going to clothe a new baby( I had given almost everything from our first daughter away).  Then the ministers wife at our church told me that she had two rubbermaid totes filled with clothes for our baby.  A year later my neighbor gave me several totes filled with BEAUTUFUL clothes.  That neighbor continues to give me tons of clothes every year for my daughter.  Now, a friend of my mother's also sends me clothes her girls have outgrown.  My baby is now four and I have bought her two outfits in her entire life and she usually has so much clothes that I have to dejunk so they will all fit in her closet.  And by the way, she is my only child that I have EVER received a hand me down for, and I have four kiddos :)

That's not to say that I give all of my kiddos clothes away after they outgrow them.  However, if I see someone that needs them I give them away and let God provide what I need in the future.  He has never failed me and I think He has actually given me back WAY more than I could have ever given away :)

Thank You Ladies !!

You have some great ideas. I think I need to get rid of a ton of clothes!! You are right , I could/should be a blessing to someone else and I need to trust God. He will provide the clothes when need ;-)

Plus I won't have to move all those totes. My hubby will be happy, as he is the one load the trailer along with my boys !

Now the only question is...... do I dare get rid of my maternity clothes ;-) Not sure if God is done giving us blessings yet !!

Have a great day...
Blessings-

I kept/keep most of my sons. I plan on having more children so that's why! I don't save EVERYTHING though- just the stuff I like or find especially cute! :)

Well I did keep a few of my favorite baby outfits for them to see ad pass down to their kids. And when the girls were younger I did keep all of my oldest's clothes.

But since my youngest was 3 the girls have been in the same size clothes. yep, one is small for her age the other tall for her age. You'd think it would make it easier?! Nope! they HAVE to have different colours. It does make it easy to sort the laundry though. ;)

I shop at a second hand store and donate everything back once they don't fit anymore. Sometimes the girls will cut the long sleeves off of their Winter clothes to get a Summer out of them as tshirts. by then they are both usually in the next size up anyway.

I have friends with 12 kids and 9 kids and they do pass down all the clothes. We've given the younger girls some new clothes and they were thrilled!

Our Town has an Annual Yard Sale Day.  People come from near and far, leaving me with much less items and lots of $$.

I used to sell my clothing on eBay as a PowerSeller but since they've become FeeBay I've stopped.

There's a site called Bonanzle.com that is similar to eBay w/o the high fees, you could try there.

I have a selling blog you could send me a message and possibly sell on there.

I pass my 11 year old girls clothes down to her 9 year old sister then on to a friend with a 6 year old girl. I get lots of boys clothes from my friend with 10 yr and 8 yr old boys for my 6 yr old and then again pass them on to a younger family.  I love to see outfits  being re-worn and getting good use. It's still nice to buy new for good wear but its good for kids to see things be recycled and to appreciate the new clothes they do get.
