What Are Your Kids Reading This Summer?

Started by The Happy Housewife , author of The Happy Housewife 7/11/2011 5:00:10 AM

I love to read, and I want my kids to love to read. So far I have a few voracious readers and a few reluctant readers.

Getting my reluctant readers to pick up a book on their own has been a bit challenging. But I've learned that a lot of their wanting to read has to do with the book.

My oldest never liked to read until he found the My Side of the Mountain series. Another child needed the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series to get him motivated to start reading.

This summer I plan on introducing the Junie B. Jones and Ramona series to my daughter. She is a new reader and I think she'll love reading about Junie's and Ramona's adventures. Ramona was a favorite when I was a kid and my oldest loved Junie B. Jones when she was first learning to read.

My five year old (nonreader) likes any book with a pink cover. She assumes if the cover is pink it will be about princesses, ballet, dolls, or castles. In our house that is usually the case, so during reading time I'm almost guaranteed she'll grab a pink book off the shelf!

My toddler (who thinks books are for throwing not reading) is starting to show interest in the I Spy board books so we read those when I think she'll sit still.

My kids are reading their assigned summer reading books from school, along with any other book they can get their hands on. For fun, the younger one is rereading the Ramona books, while the older one reads Narnia and some cookbooks, too!

Our oldest is a new reader, so for reading time this summer I will let her pick whatever to read to us - I anticipate a lot of Fancy Nancy. Her sister asks for Ladybug Girl. As a read aloud right now we are reading Miss Bianca and Mr. Popper's Penguins are up next!

I think that my 6 yr old would love Judy Moody Girl Detective - it is one of the few that is new to me on the different book series, and we will definitely be checking it out.

My oldest (7 year old son) LOVES the Magic Tree House series and the Boxcar Children right now. He has been reading since preschool, so quickly moved into chapter books this year. He either reads on his own or with us. My 2nd (5 year old daughter) is struggling to read on her own. She picks up words here and there, but mostly we read to her. She likes anything and hasn't really settled on any specific books or series yet. My 2 yr old daughter LOVES reading I Spy books too right now. She also loves lift flap books and can read books over and over and over again :)

My son hasn't read any of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series...I wonder if it would be something he'd like or not. My 5yr old daughter would love reading the Fancy Nancy one :) My 2 yr old daughter would love the Belly Button book... Sandra Boynton is one of our favorites!

The Harry Potter books and the Left Behind books for teens are being read around here this summer.

My oldest (6) is reading Junie B Jones, Magic Treehouse, Flat Stanley and a fairy series I can't remember. My middle one (4) is working on her Bob Books and anything her sister will read to her. My little guy (2) loves any book you'll read to him but especially trucks, CARS, Mickey or anything with wheels.

My 7 yr old is listening to Rick Riordan's The Lost Hero (it's a little advanced for him to actually read just yet)
