Can you show us photos of the insides of your diapers, and what the liners look like?

I've got two kids and used disposable diapers for both, but when it comes to potty-training, I'm a firm believer in cloth trainers.  It's what I grew up with when my mom potty-trained my younger brothers, and so I never knew any different.  Plus, when I've tried the disposable trainers, I learned that the kids treated them just like a disposable diaper--soiled them right up every time!  Getting my mother-in-law on my side is much harder.  She still buys disposable trainers for my 2 1/2 yr-old daughter who is completely potty-trained, day & night and has been wearing panties for a couple months now.  Still can't figure out why my MIL feels it's necessary to buy the disposables!

I would like to do cloth diapers for our next child if we are blessed to have one.  To me the cloth trainers were a cinch, so it wouldn't be a big problem to switch from disposable to clot diapers.  Just gotta convince the rest of the world (like my MIL). :)

DeAna-
Interesting. I have never heard of cloth trainers before. Sounds like a neat idea. I agree that disposables don't work for potty training.
Cassy- I am out of town right now, but will work on a list when I return.

I just started cloth diapering about two months ago.  I got a starter set at a yard sale.  Many, many, many prefold diapers can be found at yard sales for only a dime or a quarter (most have never actually been used as diapers either!).  Then I got a snappi.  I started with the old fashioned rubber pants, because they came with the set.  I told my husband we were just going to try it. So after the first month of using cloth diapers I used our diaper budget money to buy 6 Dappi Diaper covers size medium for our 1 year old, and 6 Dappi Diaper covers size large for our 2 year old. I got them brand new on ebay for $34 which worked out to be better than $3 a piece! So the next month I did it again.  Now we have about 1 dozen for each kid, which works out pretty good.

Cloth diapering has easily paid for itself, and we are only into our 3rd month.  Though DH still insists on using the disposables that we keep on hand.

We give out treats for bravery around here, so I am hoping that it helps bring him around.  But I liked that I was bale to try it with very little up front investment.  I know I don't have the fancy kind, and maybe, month by month I will add to my collection, especially when #4 comes along, but so far this works pretty good for me.

And i feel much better about throwing a diaper that is barely wet in the wash, rather than in the trash.  It was the potty training that actually made me want to experiment.

So glad we're discussing this! I have a few questions:

-Which is better: FuzziBunz "perfect size" or "one size"? I know the one-size last longer because they can fit at any age, but are they too bulky for a newborn?
-Do you use a special detergent?
-Have you ever tried using the rice paper liners for poopy diapers? (I have seen these mentioned on some other sites)
-Do homemade wipes REALLY work or are they totally gross?

Any insight would be much appreciated!!

Well I cant answer your which is better.. Because I used basic white prefolds.
Special detergent--no I did add a little borax into the machine when I noticed diapers needed a boost.
Rice paper liners......Well no. In all honesty, once the poo is solid you can shake it in the toilet. Peels right off. (sounds gross I know but really no biggie) I didnt use liners. THat was a added expense.
Homemade wipes- I used a receiving blanket cut into squares. And I would keep about 10 squares wet(with a lil soapy water made with baby bath) in a container to use. The wipes were then washed with the diapers. Works like a washrag.

Which is better: FuzziBunz "perfect size" or "one size" - I use the perfect size, so I don't have experience with the one size FuzziBunz. I do use the one size Bum G's and they aren't that bulky.
-Do you use a special detergent - I use All Free and Clear and have not had trouble, but my neighbor did have trouble with All. I will probably switch detergent when all runs out so that I don't have absorbancy issues. You don't use that much detergent for each load, so while another brand might be more expensive you are not using a lot per load.
-Have you ever tried using the rice paper liners for poopy diapers? - No I do not use these. The poop comes off pretty easy with a dip in the potty.
-Do homemade wipes REALLY work or are they totally gross? - They do work, and I don't think they are any grosser than regular wipes....
Hope that helps!

I switched to cloth diapers when my youngest was 14 months.  I started by purchasing 6 Kissaluv contours and a couple snap covers.  I knew that my daughter would just rip velcro right off, so I avoided brands with velcro for quite a while.  Over the last year, I've picked up some pocket diapers on clearance, won a few diapers & covers on blogs, twitter & facebook & now I've got a very adequate stash.

I personally really like trying out all the different brands.  I know a lot of people just buy 12 one size diapers & expect them to work from birth to potty training, but I've found that by building my stash slowly I haven't laid out a ton of money at any one time & some diapers work better than others at certain stages.  My youngest is starting to potty train & the velcro fitted diapers I avoided when she was 14 months now work GREAT around the house because she can take them off when she needs to use the potty & she is old enough to understand that she needs to leave the diaper on when she isn't using the potty.

If we are blessed again, I would LOVE to use cloth diapers from day one.

Hi Toni-

I have a question about the snaps, is the one with a hip snap really any better then the one with out. I see Fuzzi B's have both. The one w/out hip snap is cheaper. Is there really a difference ? also do you use the hemp doubler? and what is hemp?

Can I use and old hand towel cut to size as a liner? or is a liner something I really do need to buy?

one last question for you, which of the two do you think is thinner?, and do I really need a diaper pail. I have a plastic hamper.

Thanks so much for the help Toni. I really think we are going to switch over. Right now my little guy is still wearing NB diapers, and they are still a bit big one him. I think I should wait till he can fit in to the small size.(don't want any leaking )

Enjoy your last day on vac.
Take care-
Rachelle

Actualy using the "homemade" wipes was key to hubby getting on board.  It tool me too long to figure it out, I'm embarassed to admit.  Cause with Disposeable diapers you just wrap the wipe inside and throw it all away, but what do you do with a disposeable wipe, and a cloth diaper.  We were just throwing them in the trash loose, and I was just sure there was a less disgusting way to do it.  And then duh, use baby wash cloths.  They are the perfect size to fold and put inthe wipes containers.  Plus, I already had them.  I also cut up a receiving blanket, but I found that I didn't need THAT many, and the wipes had such great scrubbing texture, that I actually used less wipes.
