I'm sure i did think I did about being Mommy as a little girl - but reality is far different from pushing doll prams! Think my biggest shock was that teething would take 3 years! What surprised you the most about the reality of being mom?

Fitness at 65+ - Helping Our Kids' Grandparents

Did you know that, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH), only 25 percent of people aged 65-74 say they engage in regular physical activity?

Adults should exercise at any age, even if they have not exercised in the past. The benefits of physical activity accumulate over a lifetime so it is important that those who have exercised in their younger years keep that exercise momentum.

You're never too old to increase your level of physical activity and exercise! Any exercise that gets the heart pumping may reduce the risk of dementia and slow the condition's progression once it starts, reports a Mayo Clinic study published in October 2011 in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Are you overwhelmed by how to begin a fitness program? Do you feel that exercise may feel like a chore? Maintaining physical can be easy – and fun!

Include your grandchildren in your new active lifestyle. Play catch or walk to the playground and push your grandkids on the swings.

Have a pet? Taking your four-legged companion on a brisk walk is a fun way to increase your heart rate and improve circulation.

Listen to your favorite song and dance for a few minutes! Be careful that your “dance floor” is clear of objects and that you have adequate room to “boogie.”

As the leaves begin to fall, increase cardiovascular endurance by raking leaves. The raking motion will strengthen your arms and lifting the bags of leaves provides weight training.

Instead of working out for 30-minutes, try breaking fitness activities into three 10-minute “mini workouts” throughout the day. Begin your new exercise program slowly with moderate exercise and work your way up to more vigorous and challenging activities.

Regular exercise is beneficial for people of all ages. Exercise helps to improve muscle and joint flexibility and keeps your heart healthy. It also can improve sleep and helps to maintain a healthy weight.

Do you have additional tips to share re: senior fitness? I'd love to hear from you.

After many years, we finally have a lunch down for my 12 year old son. Same can't be said for my daughter. I want it to be healthy, but far too much food comes back uneaten. I've got a child who doesn't like sandwiches or cheese or milk or yogurt. She'll do the occasional peanut butter sandwich at home, but ones sent to school always come back uneaten. She doesn't like nuts. Sometimes I can get her to do apples and peanut butter. Any ideas for a good, solid "main course" for lunch for a kid who doesn't like...well...ANYTHING? :)

Have you read the New York Times's article, "Can a Playground Be Too Safe?"

I agree with Dr. Bell that children need to be encouraged to exercise. "Fun" playground equipment can help children become more enthusiastic regarding physical fitness.

I own a pediatric fitness facility in Rockville, MD, (www.FitnessForHealth.org) and work with schools in the Washington, D.C., area to create recess and Field Day initiatives that help children with special needs better participate in recess and become more physically fit.

A child who is socially or physically lacking stands out at recess and there is a need for adaptive phys ed programs/equipment in schools to help children feel more included in group fitness activities. The negative recess experience (or negative PE experience) stays with a child through adulthood. If adults associate physical activity with negative events in their past, they grow up to be inactive and averse to physical activity.

I believe that the key to improving children's physical fitness is to HAVE FUN while ensuring safe playground equipment and encouraging ALL children to try new things - in a safe manner.

	What do you think?

I love to read, and I want my kids to love to read. So far I have a few voracious readers and a few reluctant readers.

Getting my reluctant readers to pick up a book on their own has been a bit challenging. But I've learned that a lot of their wanting to read has to do with the book.

My oldest never liked to read until he found the My Side of the Mountain series. Another child needed the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series to get him motivated to start reading.

This summer I plan on introducing the Junie B. Jones and Ramona series to my daughter. She is a new reader and I think she'll love reading about Junie's and Ramona's adventures. Ramona was a favorite when I was a kid and my oldest loved Junie B. Jones when she was first learning to read.

My five year old (nonreader) likes any book with a pink cover. She assumes if the cover is pink it will be about princesses, ballet, dolls, or castles. In our house that is usually the case, so during reading time I'm almost guaranteed she'll grab a pink book off the shelf!

My toddler (who thinks books are for throwing not reading) is starting to show interest in the I Spy board books so we read those when I think she'll sit still.

What are your kids reading this summer?

Tell me what your kids are reading this summer for a chance to win a Summer Reading Prize Pack from the Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club!

 - Grand Prize:Pottery Barn Kids’ reading chair and a Marc Jacobs Nylon Tote (for mom!)

	EXTRA ENTRY:

Kids receive 2 great books at their door each month all summer. $6.99 a book PLUS a free $25 Restaurant.com gift card! Does your family have a favorite movie? When I sat down to write this post I had trouble thinking of my family's favorite animated film. There are so many good ones (and so many bad ones) I can't keep them straight most of the time.

I asked my daughter for her opinion and she said without hesitating, "Toy Story!" I have to agree. I remember when Toy Story first came out, I thought wow, this is a movie that my kids love and the grownups are laughing too. Good-bye Barney, hello Pixar!

The Toy Story films have been a family favorite around here for years. My boys even wore out a Buzz Lightyear costume after wearing it almost every day for several years, including to church!

I mentioned last week that I don't watch a lot of movies, but my husband and kids LOVE to watch movies. During a hot summer day, slumber party, or rainy day movies are a great way to pass the time. And there are still some movies out there that the whole family can watch. Currently our favorite family movie is Tangled.

This summer Redbox is giving away $10,000 to two families during their Redbox Summer of Fun and Games promotion. Every time you rent a movie from Redbox, and enter a valid email address, you are entered to win. How easy is that?

To celebrate of the Summer of Fun, Redbox wants to know your favorite movie quote. My kids are constantly quoting movies with some of their favorite quotes coming from the movie Napoleon Dynamite. If you haven't seen it you aren't missing out on much, although I will say it gets funnier the more you watch it.

So don't miss the Redbox Summer of Fun & Games Sweepstakes and from now until June 12, rent any two items at once and get a free promo code good for a one-night DVD rental.

Intro text: Last month Kenmore asked for my biggest household challenge which was to waste less food. This month, I'm sharing my Genius Tip on how I overcame that challenge! Kenmore is on the search for everyday genius & each month they are giving away $3,000 in Kenmore gift certificates and a chance to have the best Genius Tip turned into an Ad! Enter your Genius Tip Today!

Last month I talked about the high cost of groceries and how I was working to waste less food in the kitchen. With the high cost of gas and groceries who can afford to throw out food that's gone bad?

	My simple solution, a sharpie.

Sharpies cost less than a dollar and last forever. I keep three or four in my kitchen and use them to label food in my fridge and freezer. I haven't started yet, but I'm probably going to start using them for my pantry food too.

I write the date the jar was opened, or a description of the item (if it is a casserole) or baking instructions. This simple step keeps everyone in the know when it comes to food in the fridge.

If you aren't sure if something has gone bad, just look for the date written in sharpie. If it was opened a month ago, it probably needs to be thrown out.

This works great for condiments too, which last longer in the fridge, but can still go bad over time.

You can even label things that you want used first or saved for later. Like "don't eat the last piece of cheesecake, or else." :)

Keeping a sharpie in the kitchen is a great way to simplify and stay organized. Especially if you aren't the only one who uses the fridge.

Do you have a genius tip to share? If so you can share it and win $3,000! Did I mention a certain someone you know is judging? That would be me! I'm not eligible to win, but you are, so go share your Genius Tip and win big!

Have you heard that Skecher’s has launched Shape-ups for Girls?

Skecher’s Shape-up shoes were originally created to help women tone their leg and glute muscles while wearing “cute sneakers.” Recently, the company launched a version for girls as young as seven years-old (size 2) to allegedly adhere to the principles of childhood anti-obesity campaigns.

Leonard Armato, president of Skechers Fitness Group, said the company is trying to send a positive message about fitness. "The whole message behind Shape-ups is to get moving, get exercise, and get fit," he has stated in news interviews. "This is the same messaging being used by the First Lady's Let's Move initiative, which is aimed specifically at children."

Armato continued, "Clinical studies have demonstrated that Shape-ups provide toning and fitness benefits including increased muscle activation, greater energy consumption, increased metabolic rates, and the strengthening and toning of certain muscles” for girls.

Do you agree? Will you purchase Skecher’s Shape-ups for Girls for your daughters?

Mother's Day is this weekend and I always find it fun to dream about your ideal gift for Mother's Day. Although I think every mother with young children would like to sleep in on Mother's Day, that isn't always possible.

Something I've been eyeing for the past few weeks (I even talked about it on Facebook and my readers overwhelmingly told me they loved theirs) is the Nook (or Kindle).

I love to read, and I love the idea of having my favorite books on a portable little device. I have also heard that you can enlarge the font on those little devices, so those of us who are fast approaching forty have an easier time reading the words. Not that I would need this feature, I'm totally thinking of my husband. ;)

To celebrate Mother's Day, Ebates is offering 6% cash back on all Barnes and Noble purchases, plus free shipping.

If a Nook is not your thing, Ebates is offering double cash back on many of your favorite stores, and remember it doesn't cost anything to shop through Ebates, they pay you for buying things you would already be purchasing!

Ebates wants to make your Mother's Day a little better this year by giving away a $1000 shopping spree to one of the Ebates stores! Considering you can shop at Ebay and earn cash back I know many of you could make that $1000 stretch!

How to Enter: Visit Ebates.com and find something you or your favorite mom would love. Reply below with a description of what you found! A random winner will be announced Monday, May 10, 2011.(You must be registered with Ebates to win.)

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Ebates. The opinions and text are all mine. Contest goes from Monday, May 2nd to Monday, May 9th 2011.

My biggest grocery budget buster every single month is food waste. Items disappear in the fridge or sit uneaten. I also struggle with the "how long has this been in here" issue. Since I don't want my family to get sick from old food my motto has been "when in doubt, throw it out."

How do you keep from wasting food?

Do you have a food/cooking challenge? Share it below, and we'll try to help solve it!

I just started a new community in honor of my new blog, Soundtrack To I Do. I would love some followers if you want to come check it out. I just posted this discussion over there, so feel free to answer it there or here:

If you are married, what was your first dance song? Looking back, do you still love your choice? If you got remarried today (hopefully to the same person) would you choose differently?

If you are not married, do you already know what you want to dance to for your first dance as a married couple?

What type of fun activities are included in the download?

	-Coloring pages
	-Dot to dot
	-Tracing
	-Counting
	-Drawing
	-a.m. vs p.m.

I know many people outside of the BabyCenter community have not heard little Scarlett Grace's story, although her parents have started a blog called Butterflies to tell it.

Scarlett is having brain surgery today to remove a massive brain tumor that was discovered at her 2-month well-baby visit. This little girl is just 5 weeks younger than my sweet baby. I cannot imagine having to go through that.

Please read about wearing red for Scarlett over here, at my blog. There is also a link there to the 'event' created for wearing red today.

Thanks so much, and please keep Scarlett, Brandi, and Chris, as well has her whole medical team, in your prayers.

I'm trying to win a ticket to Blissdom. I want to go so bad, but there is no way I can afford the ticket price. Will you please, please, please do me a favor and vote for me over at Market Mommies. It will only take a second and you don't have to register or anything. Just one click and your work will be done.

According to the rules you can vote only once. I was able to vote once on my laptop, once on my desktop, and once from my work computer. Voting ends December 20th--just in time for Christmas.

I currently have 2% of the vote---it's so embarrassing :( I need a lot more. (The first place currently has 56%---sigh)
