Let's Ban These Words/Phrases in 2010

Started by Jeannie , author of atlantic beachlife 1/3/2010 1:03:46 AM
I'm sure we all have certain words and phrases that are so overused to our ears, we'd be happy if we never heard them again.

Or is it just me?  Let's find out!

For starters, I'd ban:

1.   I 'heart' ___________.  I don't heart that phrase.  I  hate it.

2.   "_______, not so much."

3.   Dude.  Certain bloggers use that so often it makes my skin crawl.

4.  When bloggers/writers use, "I'm all _____," in lieu of some variation of 'I said/spoke/told her' - - you know, that sort of writing.

5.  Same for "I go," or "He goes," to indicate speaking/speech.

I'l think of more when I sleep on it.  Dude.

This list makes me laugh.  I am still going to call my husband DUDE though if that is okay with you!

this is funny; i'm laughing just reading the responses.

a long time ago when i lived in michigan a certain talk radio host would do an annual show on this - banned words and phrases - and i loved listening to it; i would always LOL, dudes, y'know?  in fact, I really 'heart-ed' that show.

for the record, i am thinking of the writing styles of a few popular bloggers (not cjane) when I say i really deplore the use of 'dude' (in writing especially) and the 'i'm all/ i'm like' writing style meant, i guess, to mimic a conversational speaking style.   or something.  it just doesn't work for me.  i'm not cool enough to write like that, or something.  it just feels false, but it is most definitely a trend among some of the high profile bloggers i've read.

here's another one.  i'm guilty of having done it myself, and it's meant to be for effect, but it's a definite trend in blog writing style and it's getting to the point where i cringe when i see it so i guess i better not do it anymore myself, because really, that thing?  when i do that with my writing where i ask a question that really isn't a question?  it really isn't me.  i think it's a trendy style of blog writing.  or am i the only one who's noticed it?

*gasp*

are you implying that i'm...old?

dude, i am so not old.  i'm like, young.  well, not young young but, gulp, i'm not old!

(yes, though, i think you might have a point. but it bugs, still :-)

i must say, in reading this list one pretty famous blogger comes to mind who is guilty of using almost all of these phrases throughout almost every post she writes ;-)

i completely agree on all of these listed. i really hate the i heart and just cringe with lol and especially rofl. sorry, but no you are not. nothing i have ever said to a real person has ever made them literally roll on the floor in laughter. my friend has started using nlbf - not laughing but funny.

my pet peeves though tend to go more towards certain words and their misuse/misspelling. the biggest one for me - definitely. not defiantly. not definately. also, when people write awe when they really mean aww. and loose instead of lose. nitpicky, i know.
