Adopting a Toddler: Part One

Started by Janae , author of Pink Moss 11/30/2010 3:25:49 PM

For those of you following my adoption story, I just posted the first of several parts about adopting a toddler.  There isn't enough information on the subject so anyone that has advice or ideas on books I could read etc. would be welcome!

Thanks!

I adopted my first child when he was 18 months old. He's 17 now. Any questions you might have I'll be happy to answer!

ooo..yes, How much did you hold him the first months...years... at what point do you feel like he was setteled?  I know he will always struggle with things, but wonder what your time line was as far as milestones.

I carried him around all the time hugging and kissing on him. He was a pretty active toddler so I got the lovin' in whenever I could. Lots of bed and nap time snuggling and book reading. He settled in fairly quickly and recognized me as Mom and preferred me as such very early. He was a bit behind in milestones but once he was in a stable nuturing home he took off and hit everything on target (as did my daughter when she was adopted). I think the kids know when they are where God wants them. So cool of you to adopt a toddler! -- Sent from my Palm Pixi On Dec 5, 2010 10:42 AM, BlogFrog <[email]> wrote: New!  Replying to this email will automatically post your reply to the discussion. That sounds a lot like we do :)  He is doing really well and I was worried about the milestones, but he is learning SO fast I can't even believe it!  Even his body is catching up in size.  I am so happy to hear some good feedback from someone that has seen it happen.  Thanks!

It has been quite the journey already.  Today I had to go on an errand and he flipped out.  I couldn't take him because the car seat was gone...he was shaking and so sad. When I came back he was so happy but when I put him to bed tonight, he kept waking up.  I think he was still trying to process it...

Hang in there! My husband and I adopted our boy #3 when he was just 8 mos. old- he had been in foster care for 2 mos. at that point.

The adjustment period was a bit tough- he had learned to scream instead of just a reglar cry. (I can only assume it is because there were times when no one came)

He is just simply boy #3 for us- we love him dearly & the other 2 boys adjusted very quickly to a new brother even though they didn't have the regular 9 months to prepare.

That being said, he is now 5 years old and is having some issues. We are getting help for him so that he can be successful at overcoming life's challenges.

No matter what the challenges - we know that God has him right where he is supposed to be.

Best of luck to you- just take each day as it comes & love that baby! Congrats!
