Any Medical School students/Residents or Spouses?

Started by Ashley , author of Appreciating the Details 2/9/2010 5:03:09 PM
I find that my experience with medical school (through my husband) has been something I process a lot through my blog. It is such an unbalanced and unique experience--but one that comes with great opportunities.

I would love to hear the experiences of others...

My husband is a 2nd year medical student. It's quite the journey isn't it? I'm off to check out your blog. I'm always looking for blogs from fellow med student wives!

Looking forward to reading about your journey...

We're wrapping up our fourth year (Hooray!) and anxiously anticipating "match day"--where he finds out where we'll be for residency. Second year was certainly heavy in the books (especially board studying...which felt like it would never end). But 3rd/4th year IN the hospitals was rejuvenating. I'm sure your husband is looking forward to it.

Emily,

Looks like you have had quite a journey with a move across the country and all. Blessings on your journey, and I hope you have found a strong network of support for all the stress (and absence) that comes with being married to a med-student.

Hi there....

I guess my husband didn't go through "MEDICAL" school...but he did go through "Pharmacy" school....He got his Bachelors degree first in Biology and Chemistry...Then did his 2 years pre-pharmacy and then 4 years of Pharmacy.

It was a long hard struggle for us. I am glad we were married. Because it was such hard times we really had to turn to each other. We had our moments though of just wanting to scream! We are by no means perfect.

Money was tight. I didn't see my husband that much because of all the studying, study groups, labs, classes, working during school, and just every day chores...

It was a long haul. But now he loves being a pharmacist. He is doing retail pharmacy, but hopes to actually work at a hospital one day. But first he will have to do some more residency for half the pay he takes home now.

I look foward to reading your journey.

Carolyn

Good luck studying for the MCAT! That is some hard work AND a good practice round for the board tests you have to take in medical school.

It's certainly a long journey, but there is a lot to be appreciated in the process. Before you know it you'll be in residency...it goes so fast.

I was premed for a while after my husband got out of the military. I had taken my MCAT's and was preparing for the application process when my husband was reactivated and mobilized. I knew I couldn't attend medical school while he was deployed because we have three kids. I wouldn't have been home enough so I changed plans. I am going into my second to last semester of nursing school now. Nursing allows me to spend much more time at home with the kids. Maybe down the line somewhere I will get back on the MD track, but for now I'm in nursing.

Lindsey, My husband has often commented that in some ways he thinks nursing would have been better because of the more reasonable schedule in both training and practice. I think you made a great choice!
