Crafting & Sewing with Kids...

Started by KidGiddy , author of Kid Giddy a Division of 2 is Beautiful, LLC 3/5/2010 9:51:44 PM
I remember sitting on my moms lap to sew with her on her sewing machine - now I do it with my own girls...

I just posted today how to start teaching sewing (more than just lacing cards)...and it's so much fun!

http://kidgiddy.blogspot.com/2010/03/giddy-up-friday-sewing-for-beginners.html

I was wondering how you all craft with your kids...

Thanks, Kerry

I have sewn some shirts for my son and he really enjoyed watching it! Haven't done it in a couple weeks though.

I am a crafter, but sewing is a talent that I've never quite grasped. I have two toddlers that love to "help" me in my craft room! I have started involving them in my crafts in an attempt to keep them from ruining projects that I'm working on. Some of their favorite things to create are made from Magic Nuudles. http://www.magicnuudles.com/. They are so much fun!

Each of my kids has a special box that they keep their favorite projects and crafts. I think it's never too early to incorporate art into their lives!!

We sew nearly every day.  My children have watched and now participate.  I also wrote an article on teaching children to sew.  It's at the Fabric.com blog.  I'll hop on over and read yours'.

I love to sew, and my 6 year old son likes to watch.  The other 2 boys and my 2 year old daughter are oblivious!  ha!  I think I may try to teach my 6 year old to sew, because he asked for his own sewing machine!

I do make it a point to do various crafts with my kids.  Around Easter, we made paper plate bunnies.  That was the last we did, so it is about to time come up with something new.  :)

I set up my sewing studio around the kids playroom. It drives my husband nuts, but I have to sew. I decided in order to sew I would need to have a place that (a) faced outward--so I could keep an eye on my little ones and that (b) was somewhat confined so that the kids didn't get into everything.

Typically I sew while they play or while they are at preschool. My setup keeps everything manageable and the boys seem to enjoy being close to me.

I love to sew. My kids love to watch, especially when I am making something for them. They started by lacing cards, now my daughter wants to do more hands on. She is actually getting her own beginning sewing machine this year for her birthday.

Plus it teaches me greater patience which I am thankful for.

I have three children and my middle girl loves craft and making anything. We found a great idea for crayon rolls and I blogged about it here

I think it is a wonderful gift to teach kids to make things themselves. It makes for confidence and beautiful home-made gifts for friends.

I will have to read your post! I craft with my daughter's around, and make them headbands and hair clips to try on :) My oldest thinks I am able to make anything and everything with my hands... today she asked me to make a birdy out of ribbon :)

By the way.. I cannot sew.. I really want to learn!

I feel like the odd duck here....

I don't know how to sew....but I am taking a class showing me how...and a knitting class....

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?? is knitting as hard as it looks???

What about sewing? I don't have a sewing machine. I should invest in that - right??

I also thought about taking a quilting class. But would that be too much to learn all in one class semester??

I got a basic sewing machine when my little girl started pre school. It has been so handy and over time I have used it to do lots of things from basic through to complicated. I have a friend who quilts and I think it looks quite complicated and potentially frustrating. I'd suggest starting simple and maybe leave the quilting until you have mastered the basics.
Good luck!
