I have read a few personal development books in my lifetime.  I find that I can get a little sad or caught up in the little things in life that bring me down (don't we all).  To help pull myself out of the blue, I read some inspiring stories or books that help remind me what life is really about.  While I don't normally do book reviews on my blog, I was given the opportunity to read The Charge by Brendon Burchard and I decided to read it.  I am glad that I did.

I first want to let you know that I am not all the way through the book yet.  Between my toddler and my newborn baby girl, reading has to go on the back burner.  Luckily my husband and I both love to read and he gives me some alone time at the end of the night so I can cuddle up with my Kindle.

In the introduction, we learn a little bit more about the author Brendon Burchard and how he came to write this book.  He takes us on a journey through some tough times in his life where he lost his way.  When researching neuroscience he realized that he had brain trauma from an RV accident that he was able to rehab.  He wrote that he had to practice mind over matter to reactivate parts of his brain.

Burchard writes about the 10 drives that he believes, if fully charged, will improve your quality of life.  These drives have been divided up into two sections of the book.  The first five drives are drives for control, competence, congruence, caring, and connection.  The second part of the book focuses on the forward drives, the drives for change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness.

The chapter that spoke to me personally the most so far was The Drive for Congruence chapter.  I know a lot of women who struggle with self-image.  I know that I do.  I constantly find myself saying that I am not looking my best, or that I am going to work out one of these days to make my body look good.  When given a complement, it is very hard for me to just say "thank you" and believe the person. Burchard wrote a mantra in the book that has stuck in my head since I read it, "Think more of yourself, and demand that your actions be congruent with the best of who you are and who you can be."  I need to set new standards for myself!  This chapter helps you do that.  Burchard has the reader brainstorm some words that we believe define ourselves.  I chose these three words:  Positive, Caring, and Determined.

This book has helped change the way I look at myself and how I think about myself.  I can't wait to finish it.

If you are looking to get more out of life than what you currently have, you should read this book.

Honestly, I feel most alive after a good workout - not just one where I break a light sweat, but one where I feel like dying while I'm doing it. I never feel better than after a 'near death' workout, as I call them :)

I am getting ready to start working out as well. I have heard that it really makes you feel energized and gets your mind out of the crummies!

Picking up the phone and talking to the most important people in my life makes me feel alive--it reminds me to make time for them because they're such an important part of who I am!

I gotta look up congruent

Congruence is the state achieved by coming together, the state of agreement. That is what Burchard is referring to in his book, being congruent in how you engage the world. Congruence can be positive or negative depending on our self-image.

Watching my children doing what they enjoy makes me feel alive. It's such a blessing to see them grow.

I have spent so much time trying to recover my son from autism, and he is almost there, that I worry I won't have anything left when we are done. It makes me feel amazing to help him, and others recover and I think that is my true calling.

Working out! Honestly if I have a bad day, or feel down in the dumps, I work out and it kicks me up into high gear and makes me feel ALIVE more than anything else can!
