I have read a few personal development books in my lifetime. I find that I can get a little sad or caught up in the little things in life that bring me down (don't we all). To help pull myself out of the blue, I read some inspiring stories or books that help remind me what life is really about. While I don't normally do book reviews on my blog, I was given the opportunity to read The Charge by Brendon Burchard and I decided to read it. I am glad that I did.
I first want to let you know that I am not all the way through the book yet. Between my toddler and my newborn baby girl, reading has to go on the back burner. Luckily my husband and I both love to read and he gives me some alone time at the end of the night so I can cuddle up with my Kindle.
In the introduction, we learn a little bit more about the author Brendon Burchard and how he came to write this book. He takes us on a journey through some tough times in his life where he lost his way. When researching neuroscience he realized that he had brain trauma from an RV accident that he was able to rehab. He wrote that he had to practice mind over matter to reactivate parts of his brain.
Burchard writes about the 10 drives that he believes, if fully charged, will improve your quality of life. These drives have been divided up into two sections of the book. The first five drives are drives for control, competence, congruence, caring, and connection. The second part of the book focuses on the forward drives, the drives for change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness.
The chapter that spoke to me personally the most so far was The Drive for Congruence chapter. I know a lot of women who struggle with self-image. I know that I do. I constantly find myself saying that I am not looking my best, or that I am going to work out one of these days to make my body look good. When given a complement, it is very hard for me to just say "thank you" and believe the person. Burchard wrote a mantra in the book that has stuck in my head since I read it, "Think more of yourself, and demand that your actions be congruent with the best of who you are and who you can be." I need to set new standards for myself! This chapter helps you do that. Burchard has the reader brainstorm some words that we believe define ourselves. I chose these three words: Positive, Caring, and Determined.
This book has helped change the way I look at myself and how I think about myself. I can't wait to finish it.
If you are looking to get more out of life than what you currently have, you should read this book.
